UD Volleyball Starts Pacific Coast Classic with Pair of Setbacks

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Dallas volleyball team started the 2019 season and Pacific Coast Classic with a pair of losses to hosts Pomona-Pitzer College and No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College.


(MATCH 1: Dallas fell 3-0 to Pomona-Pitzer | 21-25, 17-25, 20-25)

The Crusaders scored the first two points and would go in front 4-3 in the early going of the first set. After a string of five straight points for the Sagehens would go up by as many as six at 16-10. UD rallied back to cut the deficit to 22-21 on a service ace by Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas), but the final three points went to the host school for an early lead.

After dropping the second set, the Crusaders fought hard in the third set forcing eight ties. The back-and-forth match resulted in Dallas grabbing its lone lead of the frame at 19-18 on a service error. The next five points belonged to Pomona-Pitzer and seven-of-eight would close out the set-sweep.

Pomona-Pitzer hit a .155 kill percentage, while the Crusaders were held to -.037. The home team also had 12 blocks.

Naomi Chen-Mallouk notched a game-high 11 kills and collected 10 digs for a double-double. Grace Fan hit a .417 kill percentage, while Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong followed at a .353 kill-clip. Izzy Deatherage matched Chen-Mallouk with 10 digs, while Lauren Asato had a team-high 12. Adrienne Tong was responsible for 29 of the team's 32 assists. 

Dayjah Whyte (Round Rock, Texas) and Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Crusaders offense in kills with six and five, respectively. Larissa Ramirez (San Antonio, Texas) posted a team-high 13 assists in her collegiate debut at setter. UD edged the Sagehens in digs by one (54-53) led by Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) with 18. Anable chipped in 11.


(MATCH 2: Dallas fell 3-0 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps | 13-25, 13-25, 12-25)

The fifth ranked Stags in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) powered by UD easily in the nightcap of the Pacific Coast Classic. Moving from Pomona-Pitzer's home court to CMS's, the Crusaders could not halt a strong offense from the defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champions as they hit .389 for the match.

Five different players for the Stags eclipsed five kills, led by Phoebe Madsen with seven. Izzy Sakoda and Regan Dinovitz contributed six apiece, while Melanie Williams and Sonia Bliss recorded five to wrap up the group.

Madsen and Sarah Tritschler shared the majority of assists with 12 and 11, respectively. Four players had at least seven. Tritschler also grabbed a game-high 19 digs.

Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas), Porras, and Anable each had four kills for team-highs. Ramirez led the team with 12 assists, and Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas) contributed seven.
