Crusaders Sweep Centenary College on Friday to start Conference Weekend at Colorado College
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Dallas volleyball team swept Centenary College of Louisiana 25-21, 25-20, 29-27 in their first match in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Crossover hosted by Colorado College. The Crusaders (15-8, 5-4 SCAC) have now won four straight games. Dallas has beaten Centenary in both meetings in 2018. UD topped the Ladies 3-1 back on September 23 at Southwestern.
Centenary gained a 9-7 lead in set one. Dallas stormed back to gain control of the set by taking nine of the next 11 points for a 16-11 lead. The Ladies did not let up, as they went on a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game at 16. Makenzie Shaw and Elizabeth Epley led the way with a kill each. Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas), Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas), and Dayjah Whyte (Round Rock, Texas) led the Crusaders down the stretch with kills to take set one.
Set two was tied at 7. Both team traded points as the game was tied again at 10 and 14. At this point, Dallas broke away by taking six of the next seven points (20-15) The Ladies did not go down easy as they cut into that Crusader lead (22-20) with a Michaela Brantley kill and a few UD errors. Dallas took the final three points all thanks to Centenary errors for the set two win.
The Ladies came out fire hot with a 15-4 lead in set three. After the Dallas timeout Anna Stevenson (Dallas, Texas), Whyte, and Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) each had kills to cut into that huge lead (9-17). Dallas exploded with a 10-0 run to not only cut the lead but gain their first lead of the set (19-17). The momentum shifted towards the Crusaders side, but Centenary did not go away. It was tight down the stretch, but Dallas finished off the Ladies 29-27 for the straight-set sweep
A trio of Crusaders hit double-digits in digs. Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Smith had 20, 15, and 12, respectively. Smith completed her double-double with 37 assists for the team-lead. Whyte led the offense with 12 kills, with an impressive .409 hitting percentage. Garcia contributed 10 kills and seven digs. Porras added nine kills.
Dallas had 11 blocks in the game. Stevenson had a career-high five blocks tonight, including one solo. The Crusaders who set atop the SCAC in service aces had five tonight. Pua and Porras both had two, while Garcia added one.
