Volleyball Dominates in Home-Opening Sweep Over Mississippi University For Women

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas volleyball team swept Mississippi University for Women 25-4, 25-13, 25-19 in the their home opener in the UD Classic on Friday night. Dallas (5-3) on the season has won four matches in a row and has won back-to-back home openers. 

The Crusaders produced a season high in the game with a .400 Kill Percentage. Dallas on the evening hammered 49 kills, the second highest mark in that category in 2018. Dayjah Whyte, (Round Rock, Texas) who has had double-digit kills in five matches this year, pounded 12 tonight. Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Arizona) posted her second career double-double tonight having 10 kills and 11 digs.

Down 2-1 in the first set, Dallas changed the momentum grinding out nine straight points with Lexi Shafer (Sugar Land, Texas) serving. Another 13-0 run helped secure the set one win for the Crusaders.

Dallas had an early 2-0 lead in set two, but Cicely Goldhorn managed back-to back kills to get The W back in the set. Goldhorn led the Owls (1-11) with five kills. Up 5-4, the Crusaders pushed the lead with six straight points to gain an 11-4 advantage. Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas) and Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas) finished the set strong with kills of their own to take a 2-0 set lead.

UD charged out to a 6-1 lead in set three with the help of four errors by the Owls. The W overcame the deficit and tied the match at eight. Kayla King hit one of her three kills on the night to give the Owls their first lead of the match (9-8). The Owls did not hold the lead for long. Seven straight points shifted the momentum back to the Crusaders. Hannah O'Barr had back-to-back service aces along with an UD error to get the Owls back down only two points (15-13). Whyte finished out a strong night with three more kills down the stretch to finish off Mississippi University for Women for the UD sweep.

Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) continued her dominance at the setter role with a double-double on the evening. She had 31 assists and 10 digs. Smith, who now has 157 assists on the year, is fifth all-time in assists in University of Dallas history.
