Crusaders Prepare for SCAC Semifinals vs. Southwestern University at TLU Hosted Site

SEGUIN, Texas - The University of Dallas women's soccer team travel to Seguin, Texas to take on Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Southwestern University this Saturday in the semifinal round of the SCAC tournament.

The two teams did not play each other earlier this year, but the last time these two teams played in 2019 UD defeated the Pirates on the road 1-0.

As the lower seed, No. 3 Seed UD is the designated road team. This year on the road, Dallas (5-2, 4-2) are 3-0 with two shutouts. Back on March 13, the Crusaders defeated Centenary College of Louisiana 1-0. On March 27, UD beat Austin College 2-1, and on April 1 Dallas won against the University of St. Thomas 1-0.

The No. 2 Seed Pirates (6-1, 5-1) are the designated home team and this year they are 2-1 at home with both wins coming via shutout. The loss came on March 7 against Trinity University with a score of 4-2. On March 13, Southwestern beat Austin 1-0, and March 27 the Pirate beat Schreiner University 1-0.

Things to Note:

With the win over St. Thomas, the Crusaders have now reached their third consecutive SCAC semifinal under four-year head coach Lexi Stinson. The previous two results were a 2-0 loss to Trinity in 2019, and a 2-0 loss to Southwestern in 2018.

The Pirates are the reigning SCAC champions. The Pirates won the championship in 2019 in Georgetown forcing Trinity to a 0-0 tie and ousted the Tigers in penalty kicks, 5-4.

The two goals scored by Andrea Coppi (Keller, Texas) in the game against St. Thomas is the first time this season a Crusader has scored twice in the same game.

Southwestern has been involved in four shootouts in the SCAC tournament since 2013. Also four times were 0-0 ties, and the Pirates are 3-1 in those shootouts, including one in 2015 against the Crusaders in Irving.

Dallas has been the No. 3 seed just one other year since joining the SCAC in 2011-12. That year was 2014 when it ousted Schreiner University in the first round and fell to Texas Lutheran in the semifinals. Dallas is 1-4 in tournament semifinals, with its lone victory coming in the first-ever attempt over Southwestern in 2012. It was also UD's lone year to be as high as the second seed. The Crusaders are 1-1-1 versus Southwestern in the tournament.

UD is 9-0-1 in the last two seasons when Alyssa Mencacci (League City, Texas) scores a goal. Also, Mencacci has never scored more than one goal in a game at UD. Both of hers in 2021 were on the road at St. Thomas and Austin College.

SCAC Implication:

The opponent of the Dallas/Southwestern will be decided in the early game on Saturday. The No. 1 Seed Trinity Tigers play against the tournament hosts and No. 5 Seed Texas Lutheran University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
