Crusaders charge back in 2nd Half; Tie Schreiner on Friday
KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas women's soccer team emerged with a 2-2 tie at Schreiner University on Friday evening. Goals by two different Crusaders within the last 15 minutes of regulation wiped away a 1-0 deficit, but the home team would even things on a late penalty kick to force extra time and ultimately end with a draw.
Monica O'Donnell (Lincoln, Neb.) scored the equalizer at the time with her second goal – both against the Mountaineers – of the season at the 75:58 minute mark. Elisa Duran (Pomona, Calif.) put Dallas (3-6-2, 2-4-1 SCAC) in front during the 82nd minute. Bekah Gonzalez (Reno, Nev.) assisted both UD scores to give the guests a trio of players with two points apiece in the match.
Schreiner (3-8-2, 2-7-1 SCAC) outshot the guests 6-2 in the first half. A goal by Marissa Wheeler lifted SU on top at the 40:53 mark. Out of the break down 1-0, UD was called offsides twice and given another opposing shot through the first 30 minutes of the last frame. Then O'Donnell and Duran broke through with two-of-three Dallas shots in the second half.
Lindsey Fitz buried the tying penalty kick that equaled the score with 1:34 minutes remaining.
The Crusaders totaled four shots in the later periods compared to SU's two. Dallas made four attempts altogether in overtime this past weekend, with three in the second overtime. In the first extra frame, both teams attempted a shot. Katia Guzman (Pearland, Texas) missed high early in the first extra 10 minutes. Natalie Kutac (Bulverde, Texas) corralled a late-save in the first overtime period to preserve the tie at the time.
Kutac ended with the decision in goal, as that lone save came in 65 minutes of action. Olivia Severson (La Crosse, Wis.) made three saves in the start. Schreiner's keeper Jordin Toso collected three saves in full 110 minutes.
In the second overtime, Duran was stopped on a shot on target by Toso. A third offsides on UD had been called previously to begin the second extra period. Toso saved the final effort on goal by O'Donnell with 109:15.
Duran and O'Donnell both posted game-highs in shots (3), shots on goal (2), and goals (1). Guzman took two shots. Wheeler for Schreiner was the other top-player in the match matching that line with the other non-penalty goals.
Dallas finished with a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, despite being outshot 13-9. Each side got whistled for 11 infractions.
These teams tied 1-1 last year at Kerrville.
