Women's Soccer comes up Short in 2-1 Defeat at Whittier College

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Dallas women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at Whittier College. Both goals for the Poets came in the first half, and were enough despite UD getting a goal from Mason Cosgrove (Las Cruces, N.M.) with about 24 minutes left in the game.

Each team entered the match with a draw from their respective season openers. Whittier grabbed its first win to move to 1-0-1, while UD fell to 0-1-1.

After playing 110 minutes less than 24 hours prior, the Crusaders were immediately behind the first 39 seconds as Kanoe Morihara put in a follow-up goal off the cross bar. Whittier added to its lead at the 28:48 minute mark on a goal by Jazmin Gomez.

Dallas was outshot 8-2 in the first half and 15-5 overall but did place four shots on goal compared to the Poets' seven. The Crusaders also garnered a 3-1 edge in corner kicks with all three coming in the final 45-minute span.

Cosgrove posted her first goal of the season and seventh of her career at the 66:08 mark. Whitney Jackson (Pryor, Okla.) dished the assist for the first one by the Crusaders this year. Katia Guzman (Pearland, Texas), Bekah Gonzalez (Reno, Nev.), and May Lien Le (Katy, Texas) added shots on frame, but UD could not gain the equalizer.

Stella Thermos earned the win in goal, as she grabbed three saves against four shots faced in 90 minutes. Olivia Severson (La Crosse, Wis.) notched three saves for the Crusaders in the first 45 minutes of action in goal and was saddled with the loss.
