Concordia Storms Back with 3-1 2nd Half to Edge Women's Soccer in Season Opener

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's team broke out quickly with an early two goals from Whitney Jackson (Pryor, Okla.). The freshman was eying a hat trick less than 13 minutes into the match with both coming within three minutes apart. However, Concordia University (1-0) responded with three straight goals and had the deciding one by Kaycee Moore in the 67th minute to edge the University of Dallas women's soccer team (0-1) on Friday.
The Crusaders posted the first shot by either team a minute and a half in by Makenzie Vasile (San Antonio, Texas). Her effort was saved by Shelby Franco of Concordia. Vasile did get her first collegiate point of the campaign with an assist on the first goal by Jackson at 9:36 minutes. The next shot attempt at the 12:15 minute mark was again by Jackson, and she notched a goal after Kate Vidimos (Bedford, Texas) delivered an assist.
Concordia did pound 31 shots overall in the match, which was 20-mark difference to the Crusaders. Delaney Kennedy got the Tornados on the board late in the first stanza with a goal in the left lower corner at 38:48.
Dallas remained ahead 2-1 at intermission, but the road team used a 3-1 second half to capture the season opener. Cayla Gonzalez knotted the contest on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, and then sank the go-ahead netter six and a half minutes later on a cross from Kennedy.
Mason Cosgrove (Las Cruces, N.M.) finished a pass from Elisa Duran (Pomona, Calif.) as the top two players in points from last season got into that column for the first time in 2017. It was the game-tying goal at the 60:27 minute mark. Unfortunately, Moore responded to the equalizer with the gamewinner on a long take about 30 yards out. Kayla Carlove assisted that goal to give her two helpers overall, as she found the stat sheet with one on the first CTX score.
Concordia overall held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks with a 5-2 difference in the first 45 minutes. Elena Naccari (Covington, La.) made six saves per half for 12 overall in 90 minutes. Franco had four saves in a complete match. Carlove pounded 10 shots for a game-high and tied Moore with four on goal. Jackson had a team-high four shots with three on target while Cosgrove had both her shots on frame.
