Women's Soccer gives big send out on Senior Day; Defeats Sul Ross State University 5-0

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's soccer team (5-13-1) gave a powerful performance on "Senior Day," topping Sul Ross State University (3-13) by a final score of 5-0. It was the Lady Crusaders fourth shutout of the campaign, and third at home as they wrapped up the final regular season match on their own field.

Dallas would net a season-high five goals and shattered a new team most 53 shots on the afternoon. On an overcast day with a sloppy field from earlier rain, the home squad broke a new season-high in shots by halftime with 29 attempts. Sophomore Lauren Hood (Bedford, Texas) would break the tie at the 37:48 minute mark on her first goal of the year. Freshman Mason Cosgrove (Las Cruces, N.M.) aided on the assist, as Hood completed a one-timer off a rebound from the Sul Ross State goalie.

A little under five minutes later, the Lady Crusaders struck again with a goal from sophomore Mackenzie Vasile (San Antonio, Texas). It was the forward's second netter of the season, and beat the keeper to the right side on a hard striker at the top of the box.

The pair of scoring sequences lifted UD to a 2-0 advantage at intermission.

Senior Nicolette Perez (San Diego, Calif.) logged her second goal of the season in the 54th minute to push the lead 3-0. Sophomore Taylor Ray (Cypress, Texas) and freshman Kathryn Zepeda (Lynnwood, Wash.) rounded out the strong offensive day for the Navy and White with goals at the 64:55 and 76:12, respective, marks. It was Ray's first goal of the year and Zepeda's third – tying her with Cosgrove for a team-most.

Senior Abigale Weisbrod (Mesquite, Texas) and Cosgrove fired the most shots with seven apiece. The duo were among a group of seven players to place three shots on goal. Sophomore Alice Nelson (Jackson, Tenn.) and Vasile locked perfect shots on goal percentages going three-of-three. Senior Mariah Fairbanks (Rocklin, Calif.), sophomore Sydney Stirling (McLean, Va.), and Perez were also within the unit.

Overall, the Lady Crusaders pounded a season-high 28 shots on frame and created 14 corner kicks. 11 players would contribute at least one shot attempts, while 10 garnered multiple shots in the triumph.

The Lobos had Shelby Stegent (3-13) play all 90 minutes in the net. She nabbed 23 saves against 28 shots faced. SRSU would attempt two shots in the opening stanza, but were held as Dallas maintained possession throughout most of the contest.

Senior Alice Bloemer (Sterling, Mass.) received the win with her first shutout of her career. In a complete-match effort, the keeper recorded a save.

Prior to the opening kickoff, the UD women's soccer program recognized a quartet of athletes that have been four-year members. This included: Bloemer, Fairbanks, Perez, and Weisbrod.
