Women's Soccer soaked on Friday at Centenary; Drop 2-0 Contest
SHREVEPORT, La. – On a miserable rainy night Friday, the University of Dallas women's soccer team (4-12-1, 3-7-1 SCAC) was topped 2-0 by Centenary College of Louisiana (2-13, 1-10 SCAC). The Ladies scored a goal in both halves, and Dallas was unable to find the back of the net, despite holding an 11-6 edge in shot attempts.
Centenary got on the board early as Riley Spudic scored the first goal of the match at the 3:31 minute mark. The other goal for Centenary occurred fairly early in the second half, as AJ Walsh completed a goal by dribbling in the back post, at the 51:56 mark. The initial play was a cross from Madison Alexander, which hit the cross bar. Walsh gained possession and scored to double the home squad's advantage and was enough to keep.
The Lady Crusaders were unable to find an answer throughout the night. UD took its first shot opportunities in the 13th minute as sophomore Alexa Acquista (Las Vegas, Nev.) shot wide right of the goal. Freshman Mason Cosgrove (Las Cruces, N.M.) followed nearly three minutes later with a shot high over the mark.
At halftime, the Maroon and White held a 1-0 edge, with Dallas providing a slight difference in shots 4-3. In the second stanza, the Lady Crusaders kicked a 7-3 advantage in shots. This included a penatly kick by senior Abigale Weisbrod (Mesquite, Texas) in the 60th minute, which was saved.
Centenary goalkeeper, Erica Coker (2-9) made five stops against all attempts faced to get the win. Her counterpart, sophomore Elena Naccari (Covington, La.) made four saves against six shots faced, as the Ladies were perfect with all shots on target in this wet contest.
On the evening, the visitors would place five shots on goal.
A trio of Lady Crusaders' notched multiple shots with two apiece. Senior Mariah Fairbanks (Rocklin, Calif.) placed both of her shots on goal, while junior Clare O'Donnell (Lincoln, Neb.), and Acquista completed the unit with multi-shot games. O'Donnell knocked one on goal. Sophomore Lauren Hood (Bedford, Texas) and Weisbrod also contributed shots on goal.
Seven was a common number for Dallas, with seven shots in the final half, and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks created. Naccari remains in second place in the conference in saves with 117 following the match. She is two away from the top spot, Austin College's Laura McGee. The 'Roos were off on Friday and are next for the Navy and White on the schedule.
