5-0 2nd Half Run Leads Bearcats by Women's Lacrosse on Sunday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's lacrosse team was edged 18-14 on Sunday afternoon to Willamette University. The Crusaders (3-7) were in a back-and-forth contest in the early going, until a surge pushed them up as many as four late in the first half thanks to five goals by Lexi Leite (Houston, Texas).

A 9-7 halftime lead was erased, as the Bearcats (2-3) picked up their second victory against a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) team this season anchored by a 5-0 run in the first 10 minutes of the last stanza.

Anabel Ohsman, who netted a game-high 10 points thanks to nine goals, got Willamette on the board quickly for a 1-0 lead.

Leite countered with her first two goals within three minutes since opening draw to give UD its first advantage of the day.

Two more goals by WU's Miranda Piros and Alayna Newland led to another lead change, with the latter goal at 18:43.

Camryn Dougherty (Drayden, Md.) knotted the game about a minute later, as Leite captured her sixth consecutive match with a hat trick to lift Dallas in front by a goal with about 13 minutes until the break.

One more tie for the Bearcats with 10 minutes by Ohsman was answered by UD's longest scoring run of the day of four in a row. Erika Keever (Fort Worth, Texas) found the back of the cage on the first pair, while Leite and Emily Pauletti (Dallas, Texas) added one.

Lexie Andrade notched the last goal of the first half with just under three minutes to close the margin to 9-7. That started a stretch of six goals in a row until Dougherty ended the Dallas drought of nearly 13 minutes over the two frames. That nipped the deficit to two (12-10), and one more answer by Keever and Leite – on a man-up – would make it 14-12 with over 13 minutes still to go.

Willamette hung on with a monster second half of scoring 11-5 during the 30-minute half.

Leite led Dallas with six goals, as she was perfect on all six shot attempts. It is the senior's fourth match this season to eclipse that goal-total and brings her to 149 for her career. Keever and Pauletti also added hat tricks with three goals apiece. A trio of players won four draw controls each including: Sarah Gamble (Allen, Texas), Mason Cosgrove (Las Cruces, N.M.), and Keever.

Lizz Winkler (St. Charles, Mo.) grabbed 13 saves against 31 shots faced in 60 minutes.

Ohsman paced the Bearcats with nine goals and had an assist for 10 points. She was 11-for-11 on shots on goal and garnered a game-high five ground balls. Andraded contributed four goals, and Emma Canchola won 11 draw controls (nine in 2nd half) that was part of the team's 20-13 advantage.

Kara Phillips turned eight shots away for saves in a 60-minute game.

The Crusaders turned the ball over 25 times compared to 19 by Willamette. Dallas held the opposition to 2-for-11 on free position shots, while both sides cleared the ball 22 times.
