Crusaders fall to Southwestern on Saturday in Women's Lacrosse SCAC Match
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's lacrosse team was topped 21-10 at home versus Southwestern University on a chilly, misty day. Southwestern (3-2) claimed the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) meeting with the help of a 10-goal difference at halftime.
The Crusaders (2-4) fell for the fourth time after starting the campaign with a pair of victories. Falling behind seven goals in the first 12 minutes, Camryn Dougherty (Drayden, Md.) got the home team on the board at the 17:20 mark.
Dougherty notched a career-high five points with two goals and three assists. The sophomore was involved in the first three UD goals on the game, which ignited a four-goal rally with just under 12 before the intermission. Dougherty assisted Emily Pauletti (Dallas, Texas) on the second Dallas goal and then tallied her other scoring result with 14 minutes left. Erika Keever (Fort Worth, Texas) brought the Crusaders within three on her first netter of the day.
Southwestern answered the threat by posting the next six goals in just over four minutes.
Mason Cosgrove (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Lexi Leite (Houston, Texas) scored to keep UD from falling behind double-digits, but the Pirates eventually got the margin with a minute by Natasha Perez-Krause.
The visitors scored the first three goals and four-of-five within eight opening minutes of the second half to keep the game beyond reach.
Leite and Pauletti secured their hat tricks late in the match with their third respective goals on free position shots. It was the second hat trick for Pauletti and her first of 2019. Leite improved her career total of goals to 127, as she made at least a trio of goals for the fifth time this season.
The Crusaders totaled 13 shots on cage with 16 attempts. Pauletti was the leader in both with four on goal and five looks. Dallas won 16 draw controls, just edged by one by the Pirates. Cosgrove led with five, while Sarah Gamble (Allen, Texas) and Keever logged four apiece. Alex Parkey (Henrietta, Texas) added three to wrap up the group.
UD was forced into 23 turnovers compared to 14 by SU. After a nine-tally difference (15-6) in the opening half, Dallas and SU were even at eight in the final 30 minutes. Southwestern also held a slight edge in ground balls, 18-16. Dallas went 3-for-5 on the free position compared to 2-for-4 by the Pirates.
The Pirates only had three failed clears (22-25) and found 28 shots on cage with 33 attempts. Hayeley Donnelly was the leader of the game with seven points thanks to a game-high four helpers. Grace Maynard, Raven Garcia, and Johnee Wolter led the offense with four goals each. Donnelly and Jillie Klumbach chipped in three each to give the Pirates all their players with hat tricks.
Mckenna Zinke and Claire Harding combined for three saves for SU.
