UD Women's Basketball Unable to Overcome Cold Stretches at Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team dropped a road decision at Sul Ross State University, 75-52, on Saturday afternoon. Both teams shot nearly the same from the field with the Lobos (2-2) hitting 44.3 percent to Dallas' (1-2) 42.3-clip. However, the Crusaders fell victim to a 26-12 difference in turnovers which led to Sul Ross State grabbing a 10-point difference (23-13) off the miscues. The Lobos also had 70 field goal attempts compared to UD's 52.

Leading scorer for the Crusaders was Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) with 18 points. The junior forward scored the first two field goals to tie the score at two and later give the guests its lone lead of the contest at 4-2 with 7:40 to go in the opening period.

SRSU's Maria Maldonado drained a trey to make it a 6-4 lead on the next possession. She scored all nine of her points from downtown, as she went 3-for-4 from long range overall.

Alissa Dutton (Houston, Texas) knotted the score at 6, but Maldonado nailed her second trifecta in a row to spark a 9-1 run from 6:29 to 4:30 in the opening stanza. Sul Ross State received three treys in a row to spark the outburst. Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) hit a layup to end the drought at 2:47, but UD only had three field goals in the last 7:06 minutes. Beyonce Perry (Lake Jackson, Texas) buried a three with time nearly expiring to keep the margin in single-digits at 25-16.

A cold start to the second half with the first jumper going to the Lobos about a minute and a half into the frame. The Lobos got 10 points by the midway juncture of the period to lead 35-16. Madi Horne (Paradise, Texas) ended the Crusaders cold spell with a jumper at 4:11. The Crusaders closed that span of the second quarter on a 16-8 run. Oliveti had the next six points on three straight UD field goals and Horne and Gracie Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) sank three-pointers. Williams swiped a steal with 14 seconds before halftime and assisted Rhyan Colbert (McKinney, Texas) on a jumper with six seconds to bring the score at 43-32.

Sul Ross charged to a 60-37 lead in the third quarter with 4:14 left, but Dallas scored 10 of the final 12 points to narrow the margin to 62-46. Perry had two treys and Williams hit a trey with time about to expire.

The Lobos used a 9-0 run and held Dallas without a field goal or points until Oliveti scored found the bottom of the net with 3:45 remaining in the game. Sul Ross led by as many as 25 (73-48) with 2:46 to go.

Oliveti was the only player from the Crusaders in double figures as she scored a season-high and her second-highest total points in her career. Diaz grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Perry contributed eight points while Dutton and Horne chipped in seven apiece.

The Crusaders won the rebounding battle 37-35.

The Lobos hit eight three-pointers compared to UD's five and both sides had 10 free throw attempts, as the Crusaders made three and SRSU was 50 percent. The home side scored a 40-24 edge in points in the paint and benefitted from a 39-16 difference in bench points.

Chandre Nunez paced the Lobos with 17 points with 8-for-14 field goal shooting. Jessica Magallanes also reached double-digits in points with 14 thanks to going 7-for-9 on the floor. Presley Anastas and Maldonado dished five assists apiece, as the Lobos collected 20 dimes.
