Crusaders Fall at Schreiner University on Friday

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Schreiner University 50-36 on Friday evening. The Crusaders (2-22, 1-14 SCAC) were held to just two points in the opening quarter. UD did outscore Schreiner in the paint 20-18, but was outrebounded 48-32 in the game. Schreiner was led by Sydney Williams and Miranda Vallejo who both scored double-digit points in the contest.

Schreiner (6-19, 6-10 SCAC) opened up the game on a 7-0 run. Out of the Dallas timeout, Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) made a layup. The Mountaineers then scored five more points to end the period to go up 12-2. Gabby Ivarra helped Schreiner grab the early lead by posting five points in that quarter.

Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) grabbed the first bucket in the second period. Vallejo then capped off a 5-0 run with a three-pointer. Josline Hernandez made a trey at the 1:52 mark to push the Mountaineers lead to 25-10. Olivia Severson (La Crosse, Wisc.) buried two free throws with time winding down. SU took a 25-13 lead into the halftime break.

SU kept things going with a 7-0 run to open up the third period. Gracie Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) joined in on the offense as she capped off five-straight points for UD with a jumper (32-18). Both teams traded buckets to end the quarter, as SU went into the fourth with a 41-24 advantage.

Diaz made two free throws from the stripe to begin the fourth frame. With 6:25 remaining S.Williams buried her two shots from the charity stripe as SU went up by 17 points (45-28). After the Mountaineers got the lead up to 20 at the 4:40 mark, Dallas went on to finish the game on a 6-0 run thanks to five points from Oliveti.

S. Williams led all scorers with 13 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. Vallejo helped the Mountaineers attack with 11 points. Ivarra and Josline Hernandez both had eight points.

UD was led by Oliveti and Diaz who both finished with 12 points. Oliveti had a team-high nine rebounds. Williams added five points and four assists, while Faith Starnes (Bryan, Texas) added four points and five boards.

Dallas forced 17 turnovers and scored 13 points off of those mishaps. The Crusaders had eight steals on the night.

Dallas will travel to San Antonio to take on Trinity University on Saturday (Feb. 16) to conclude the season. First tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
