Crusaders Fall in SCAC Action to Southwestern University on Saturday

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Southwestern University 55-38 on Saturday. The Crusaders (1-13, 1-5 SCAC) stumbled early and fell to a 21-9 deficit after one frame. After this mark, UD kept up with the Pirates attack down the stretch, but could not overcome the first quarter setback.

Southwestern University (6-9, 5-1 SCAC) started the opening period with a 13-2 run. The Pirates expanded that lead to 17-6 after a Naomi Brown layup. Alex Parkey (Henrietta, Texas) and Gracie Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) both made shots from the free throw line to help UD cut the lead to eight. A 4-0 SU run capped off by an Ifeoma Mbue layup took both teams to the second period.

Both teams traded buckets early in the second, but the Pirates gained momentum with a 4-0 run at the 6:47 mark. Coutney Maass made a three-pointer at the five minute mark to push the lead to 15 (30-15). The Crusaders found a run of their own with a trey by Williams and a lay-in by Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) to cut the deficit to 10. At the 2:58 mark Southwestern got a layup to notch the 12-point halftime lead.

Oliveti got the Crusaders going in the third period with two layups to help UD get within eight points. The Pirates did not score until the 3:53 mark in the third, but unfortunately UD was unable to find a bucket. The Pirates finished the third quarter on a 10-2 run to grab a 42-28 lead heading into the final frame.

The Pirates expanded its lead to 51-32 midway through the fourth. A 6-0 run finished off by an Alexis Vera (San Antonio, Texas) layup helped UD get closer. SU finished strong with four-straight points to take the conference victory.

Williams added seven points for UD.

Four different Pirates reached double-figures in points on the night. Courtney Maass led the quartet with 11, while Tori Carraway, Noel Pratts, and Naomi Brown all had 10.
