Crusaders Edged by Hendrix College 64-45

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Hendrix College (AR) 64-45 on Friday evening. Hendrix (6-2) exploded in the second quarter as they outscored the Crusaders 21-4. HC went on to take care of business down the stretch. Dallas (0-7) scored 16 points in both the third and fourth period, but were unable to overcome the early deficit.

The Warriors opened up the first quarter with an 8-4 lead. Faith Starnes (Bryan, Texas) buried back-to-back layups to cut the lead to two (10-8). Jayla King went on to grab eight points to end the period off of two three-pointers. This run helped HC go up 18-9 after one.

The Warriors burst in the second quarter pushed the halftime lead to 39-13. In the third period the Crusaders had three players help UD inch closer. Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) led all scorers with five points in that quarter. Taylor Jobe (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and Starnes both added four. Jobe and Starnes hit back-to-back treys to edge the Warriors 16-14 in that frame.

In the final period Diaz had another big quarter as she went for seven points, shooting 2-3 from the field and nailing all three of her shots from the charity stripe. King equalized that with seven points of her own for HC in that frame. Dallas finished out the quarter on a 5-0 run, but 32 points in the second half would not be enough after that big second quarter by the Warriors.

King led all players with 21 points and 13 boards. Kessie Jenkins followed that up with nine points, while Vinessa Daniel added eight. HC shot 25-57 (43.9 percent) from the field and a solid 69.2 percent from the free-throw line. Hendrix outscored the Crusaders 32-14 in the paint and added 27 points off the bench to secure the win.

The Crusaders were led by Starnes who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Diaz notched 13 points, while Tiffani Lowe (San Francisco, Calif.) added eight. Jobe gathered seven points along with six rebounds. Dallas was edged 38-29 cleaning up the glass.

Dallas will start conference play next week as they will travel to Centenary College on Tuesday (12/18). The Crusaders will then host Austin College on Wednesday (12/19). Both games will tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
