Women's Basketball edged in Tight Result against Dallas Christian

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team came up short versus Dallas Christian College, 69-66 on Wednesday. A productive night from Shabria Walters and Trish Daily helped Dallas Christian (1-4) get past UD with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) had a season-best 21 points and gathered her second double-double on the season grabbing 13 boards. Dallas (0-5) shot a season-best 24-62 (38.7%) from the floor but dropped a nail-bitter.

Diaz made both of her shots at the charity stripe to tie the game at 64 with 1:16 left in the final quarter, but Shabria Walters made a layup with 20 seconds remaining to put the road team up. The home Crusaders then turned it over off the inbounds pass, helping Walters get to the free-throw line. She buried both of them to make it a two possession game. Out of the home team's timeout, Tiffani Lowe (San Francisco, Calif.) found Diaz for an easy layup off of the inbounds pass to cut the lead to two with six seconds left. Trish Daily split from the free-throw line to push the lead to 69-66. A last second heave by Dallas would not fall, as the visiting team escaped with the win.

The road team grabbed an early 16-6 lead to start quarter one. In the final two minutes and forty-eight seconds, UD came all the way back to tie the game at 16 at the end of the first period. Four different Crusaders found the scoring column on the big run capped off by a three-pointer by Taylor Jobe (Queen, Creek Ariz.).

Karly Baker helped the visiting team find a four-point lead with a lay-in in the second quarter. Monica Stephens (Grinnell, Kan.) buried a jumper, along with two free-throws by Lowe to tie the game once again with 3:18 remaining. Down the stretch Trish Daily made a jumper to put DCC up. Faith Starnes (Bryan, Texas) answered with a trey to swing the lead back to UD with 46 seconds left, but a layup by Walters gave DCC a one-point lead (33-32) going into halftime.

After trailing most of the third quarter, Jobe nailed a three-pointer to give the home team its first lead of that period (47-46). Both teams traded buckets as the clock ticked down, but Breeona Cannon (Fort Worth, Texas) hit a buzzer-beater layup with an inbounds pass under the basket from Alexis Vera (San Antonio, Texas) to put UD up 53-51 heading into the final period.

Tiffani Lowe (San Francisco, Texas) gave Dallas a three-point lead in the final quarter with 5:40 remaining. But that would be as far as UD could push its lead, as DCC went on a 6-0 run to switch the momentum. Diaz got a lay-in with 3:17 left, but it would not be enough, as Dallas dropped a tight non-conference game.

Diaz was perfect from the field going 7-7, as she notched her best effort on the young season.

Starnes hit double figures in points for the third game this year with 13. Lowe added nine points along with eight assists to lead the home team in that category.
