Crusaders Drop Opening Game in David Wells Classic to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College 58-24 on Friday evening. UD forced 23 turnovers with 14 steals, as Taylor Jobe (Queen Creek, Ariz.) led Dallas with four and Breeona Cannon (Fort Worth, Texas) grabbed three. The Crusaders (0-3) were held to shooting 5 for 40 (12.5 %) from the field. This included only one jumper made in the 4th quarter, which was made by Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) at the 1:34 mark. UD was held to eight points in the second half.

In the first period the Athenas had the first two buckets by Maya Love and Corinne Bogle. Tiffani Lowe (San Francisco, Calif) and Cannon each hit free throws to cut the lead to one. CSM went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 13-3 with two and a half minutes to go. The Athenas continued this run to make it 19-8 at the end of one.

CSM (3-1) outscored the Crusaders 17-8 in the second period to create a 36-16 lead at halftime. The third quarter was a defensive struggle, as no points were scored until 6:50 when Lindsey Clearly made a jumper for the Athenas. Jobe and Diaz both hit jumpers, as they headed into the final period down 44-22. The fourth quarter was all CSM as they held the Crusaders to one bucket.  

Vanessa Diaz led the Crusaders with nine points and eight boards. Lowe followed her teammate with seven points. UD shot a solid 12-16 (75%) from the free-throw line in the game.

Teeana Cotangco led all players with 11 points. Gloria Bates followed her teammate with eight points. Kate Parrish and Lauren Longo both notched seven boards as CMS won the rebound battle 43-34. The Athenas used the advantage to score 30 points in the paint.

CSM forced 37 Dallas turnovers, as they scored 33 points off of that total. The Athenas shot 23 for 64 (35.9%) from the field.

Dallas will continue play in the David Wells Classic as they will take on Pomona-Pitzer College tomorrow evening at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. (PST).
