Austin College too much for Women's Basketball on Sunday
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team dropped a 79-46 decision to Austin College on Sunday afternoon in the Maher Center. It was difficult for the Crusaders to keep up from the start, with a 20-point lead after 10 minutes lifting Austin College.
After winning twice in the past five days, the Crusaders fell to 7-9 on the season and 1-4 in conference play. Austin College prevailed for the 10th time in a row and have achieved half of those against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) teams to stay unbeaten.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 'Roos netted the first eight points through the first three minutes to force UD into an early timeout. Celsi Caraway came up with the team's first points on a layup out of the break, but the guests flew out to a wide margin with 12 straight points.
Andrea Selkow raced down on a fastbreak to make it a 20-point lead for the first time in the game with two minutes left. Down 22, a jumper by Madilyne Borjon (San Antonio, Texas) ended the scoring of the first with a 27-7 deficit for the home team.
Dallas was outscored each period, but kept the margin slimmer in the last 30 minutes of play. However, the Crusaders could not break into the gap as AC cruised the rest of the way.
STAT NOTABLES
Borjon eclipsed double figures for the second game in a row and led the Crusaders with 11 points. Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) and Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) both chipped in 10 points. Vanessa Diaz led the team on the boards with nine, while a quartet of players recorded five. Panda Green (Farmersville, Texas) dished six assists, which was half the team's amount.
The Crusasders shot 30.4 percent from the field and were outrebounded 45-36. Austin College swiped 20 steals and committed 10 fewer turnovers (25-15). The guests shot above 50 percent (52.6) in the opening 10 minutes to lead the strong offense to a 45.8-clip in the game. AC led points in the paint 46-20 and fastbreak points 28-7.
The 'Roos had Bryce Frank pace the team with 17 points thanks to 8-for-10 shooting on the floor. She grabbed nine rebounds and was short a double-double. Meghan Lewis followed with 13 points, while Kendra Rainey added a double figure scoring performance from the bench with 11.
TIP-INS
DeCoud continued her streak of netting double-digit totals in points in every game this year.
Green delivered six assists or more in five games during the 2017 part of the season. Sunday's performance was her first since New Year's.
This is only the second time on the campaign that UD did not record a blocked shot. The other was at Hendrix College (Nov. 21st).
