Women's Basketball Head Coach Grothe accepts Southwestern University Position

IRVING, Texas – Greta Grothe, the head coach for the University of Dallas women's basketball team, announced on Monday that she has accepted the head coach position at Southwestern University. Her last day will be Friday.

Grothe became the 14th head coach for the women's basketball team in April, 2015. In two seasons, she led the Crusaders to a 19-32 record. This past campaign, her squad made it to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Quarterfinal and fell by four points (58-54) to third seeded Austin College. Dallas also played well outside the SCAC with an 8-3 mark that included tying a program-best, six-game winning streak.

Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) and Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) earned spots on the SCAC All-Conference Teams and All-Americans with the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) for consecutive years.

In 2016-17, DeCoud ranked among the top five in several categories by the conclusion of the season. This included: fourth in points-per-game (15.3), second in rebounding average (10.3), and third in field goal percentage (50.6). The rising senior set a school record and led the SCAC in total blocks with 57. Her individual effort helped the squad set a new team record on the year with 92.

Also while under Grothe's tutelage, Stoia achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the sixth player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. Stoia concluded her career with 1,037 points (11th) and 568 boards (6th).

After having no seniors during her first season coaching at Dallas, Grothe witnessed a veteran roster graduate this May with seven people total. This group comprised of: Sammi Tso (Las Vegas, Nev.) Lindsey Gendron (Houston, Texas), Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.), Caitlyn Worry (Lumberton, Texas), Bethany Pugh (Sacramento, Calif.) Stoia, and Student Assistant Bekah Hernandez.

Five of these players notched spots on the SCAC Winter Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll and helped the team achieve the highest grade-point-average for the program.

"I want to thank the University of Dallas and [Athletics Director] Dick Strockbine for the opportunity to be a head coach," Grothe stated. "I also want to thank my team for letting me be their coach and learning from them. I am going to miss them and wish them all the best. Thank you to my fellow coaches and staff for the support the past two years."

A national search will begin immediately.
