Women's Basketball falls short Versus Schreiner on Saturday

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team (8-11, 3-6 SCAC) worked hard to recover from giving up the first 12 points in the opening quarter, but would be defeated 55-49 at Schreiner University (8-11, 6-3 SCAC) on Saturday evening. It's the second straight conference setback as UD moves to 1-2 on the five game road stint. The team's playing tonight split one win apiece on the season series.

Dallas struggled to score in the opening 10 minutes, being outscored 12-3. After allowing 12 unanswered, junior Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.) sank a three-pointer with 1:12 minutes left in the frame to end the lengthy drought.

The Lady Crusaders improved as the contest ticked by, trailing by eight at intermission. The last field goal of the first half was by SU's Kelsie Jackson from beyond the three-point arc. That trey pushed the margin to 22-14 and would remain that scoreboard tally in the final 1:37 of the stanza.

In the third quarter, it appeared familiar to the first 10 minutes. After both squads traded three-pointers, the Mountaineers went on an 8-0 run with the final six points on consecutive treys to open the gap to their largest of the game by 16. The home team matched that leading distance two more times, before the Navy and White closed the last two minutes with eight of 10 points etched on its side. This included two trifectas from juniors Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) and Caitlyn Worry (Lumberton, Texas). Worry's three swished as time expired to send UD down 10 into the last quarter.

That frame proved to be the one the visitors would outdo Schreiner in the scoring column with an 18-14 edge. The Lady Crusaders clawed within four (53-49) with 1:19 left in regulation, as Stoia sank a pair at the free throw line. After an empty possession for the Maroon and White, Dallas missed two opportunities to pull closer and would go scoreless down the stretch. SU's Sabriyyah Fennell secured the victory with two more makes at the line.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Stoia and sophomore Michelle DeCould (Monument, Colo.) each recorded double-doubles for the Lady Crusaders. It was Stoia's third in the past four games, with all three coming against conference foes. She led with a team-high 14 points. - DeCoud also tied a season-high 12 rebounds and added her third double-double on the year. Stoia grabbed 10 boards. Sophomore Helen Onyenso (Oak Park, Ill.) added seven off the glass from the bench. Worry and Tonry chipped in seven points apiece and Tonry dished five of the team's eight assists.

- Both teams shot nearly even from the field with Schreiner edging the Lady Crusaders 34.5 percent to 33.3 percent. Dallas did win the rebounding battle with a 44-36 difference. Schreiner forced 19 turnovers while only committing 10 miscues.
