Saturday's Road Game favors Southwestern over Lady Crusaders

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team (3-8, 0-3 SCAC) dropped an 82-62 contest on Saturday evening at Southwestern University (4-10, 1-2 SCAC). The Lady Crusaders competed in the second half, being outscored by a point (38-37), but the home team busted out to a 19-6 advantage in the first quarter.

After the Pirates got on the board with the first two field goals, a layup by junior Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.) cut the game in half. Another four points for SU opened the advantage to six, but sophomore Helen Onyenso (Oak Park, Ill.) the next three points to nip the margin back to three (8-5). The next nine unanswered points went to the Gold and Black, and put the Lady Crusaders down 17-5 with 1:32 minutes left in the opening quarter.

The momentum remained on Southwestern's side to begin the next frame on an 11-2 run to push the gap to a 21-point edge. Dallas made a couple pushes, but went into halftime down 44-25.

In the third quarter, the squads stayed nearly even on the scoreboard, and in the final 10 minutes, the Lady Crusaders produced a deficit as narrow as 10 with 5:15 in regulation. Junior Lindsey Gendron (Houston, Texas) was able to connect on back-to-back three-pointers to cap an 11-0 outburst by the Navy and White. UD also kept the Pirates on a dry spell for half the fourth until Torri Carraway notched an inside look to end it. Still, Southwestern captured its first conference win by tallying 15 of the final 21 points in the last four minutes of the game.

The Lady Crusaders have dropped four in a row.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

- Gendron posted a season-high 17 points with the aid of matching a career-most five made trifectas. She's notched that number of successful three-pointers twice her rookie campaign. The guard was six points shy of her career-best set on January 7, 2014 versus Dallas Christian College. Gendron last scored this many on Jan. 12 that same year against Austin College.

- Also recording her second-straight double figure performance with 11 points was sophomore Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.). She led the team with six rebounds. Junior Sammi Tso (Las Vegas, Nev.) contributed nine points – all in the first half. As a team, UD snatched a season-most, 11 steals.

- Dallas shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field, while the Pirates were 47.2 percent (25-of-53). The teams were nearly even in treys hit, with the Lady Crusaders holding an 8-7 edge. The guests shot 51.6 percent (16-of-31) at the charity stripe, while SU was 71.4 percent (25-of-35).

- A trio of players garnered double-digit scoring numbers. Audrey Garcia paced the group with a game-high 22 points. Carraway and Olivia Podaras tossed in 11 and 10, respectively. Carraway finished with seven boards, as everyone on the Pirates picked at least one up. It was a 45-26 edge for the home side in that category.

- The Lady Crusaders did force 16 turnovers and committed one less at 15. SU benefited a 15-14 advantage of points off miscues. There was also a 28-16 edge for the Pirates with points in the paint.
