Redlands squeaks by Women's Basketball

REDLANDS, Calif. – In the closest margin setback of the season, the University of Dallas women's basketball team (0-3) battled University of Redlands (2-1) to a 58-53 final on Saturday night. Both squads utilized wide scoring differences in the first two quarters, before the Bulldogs would muster just enough in the second stanza to down the guests in day two of the "Redland's Tournament."

The first frame favored Redlands, 23-14, as the Lady Crusaders started the contest behind. The first time the home team extended a double-digit edge was 19-9 with barely over two minutes until the first break. Dallas would swing the momentum with an 11-3 scoring difference in the second quarter to trail by one at halftime.

Out of intermission, the Bulldogs rattled a 6-0 run to push the advantage back on their side. UD responded by engineering a 6-1 span to bring the scoreboard near even from between 4:50 and 3:21 minutes left in the third. A layup by junior Lindsey Gendron (Houston, Texas) lifted the Lady Crusaders ahead in this stretch briefly, 37-36. The guard added a free throw to extend the narrow lead to a pair. There were four more ties in the remainder of the contest.

A thrilling fourth quarter began with the visitors knotting the game 43-all on a trifecta from junior Caitlyn Worry (Lumberton, Texas). Classmate Seana Stoia (Tulsa, Okla.) added a layup to begin the 5-0 run. After Redlands tied things with a layup of its own, two more Stoia free throws and a jumper from another junior sophomore Sammi Tso (Las Vegas, Nev.) completed a 9-2 scoring spurt. The 49-45 edge was as large as the Navy and White charged away with, as the Bulldogs boasted an 8-0 streak to secure a lead that would not be relinquished. Two UD field goals with under two minutes nipped the gap to 55-53, but Redlands handled its charity stripe attempts to gain the victory.
