Hendrix pulls away from Women's Basketball in Opener

CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Dallas women's basketball team (0-1) fell 75-66 at Hendrix College (1-0) to begin the 2015-16 season. Junior Holly Tonry (Seattle, Wash.) netted a career-high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the squad, but a fourth quarter run by the Warriors was too much in the season-opener.

After a 3-0 deficit, junior Sammi Tso (Las Vegas, Nev.) tallied the first UD points of the campaign on a layup 2:15 minutes into the frame. Classmate Lindsey Gendron (Houston, Texas) would rattle in a three-pointer to lift the guests to a 5-3 advantage. The Lady Crusaders led 17-13 at the first break.

Dallas carried the momentum through to the second quarter, capping a 14-3 run after a Gendron layup with 6:48 remaining until halftime. This marked UD's largest lead of the contest. The spurt began with a shot by freshman Nicole Johnson (Houston, Texas) with 51 seconds to go in the first quarter.

The Warriors erased the margin quickly by going on an 8-0 stretch to nip the score to 27-26. Tonry buried a trifecta to push the gap back to 30-26, but the guard's field goal would be the final one in the 2:39 minutes going to intermission. Dallas trailed 33-30 at that juncture.

In the third quarter, the Navy and White worked back to a two-point edge, 50-48, by outscoring HC by five in the 10-minute span. It was all the home team in the final quarter, as the Warriors swung a 27-16 scoring difference.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • A trio of Lady Crusaders eclipsed double-digit scoring performances led by Tonry. Tso would follow with 14 and Gendron tossed in 12.
  • Dallas won the battle on the boards, 38-33, but committed 23 turnovers compared to forcing 13.
  • The Lady Crusaders were 20-of-24 from the free throw line, led by Tso's 9-of-11 display. The Warriors outshot UD 44.6 percent to 37 percent from the floor.
  • Hendrix placed four players in double figures. Anna King notched a game-high 23 points and was 7-of-8 from the field. Estrella Flores, Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler, and Breann Forbes rounded out the unit with 13, 12, and 10 points, respectively.
  • Kriesel-Bigler dished out five assists.

WORD FROM COACH

"We played hard today, but got in some foul trouble early that hurt us. The effort was there, we just need to execute in the fourth quarter better." - Head Coach Greta Grothe postgame remarks
