Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Clinches Series vs Schreiner

April 27, 2024

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team won both games of their conference doubleheader against Schreiner University on Saturday, improving to 5-28 on the year and 2-17 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 12, Schreiner 11

WP: Ava Trevino (1-12)

LP: Bayleigh Borden (0-1)

The Crusaders came out on top in a heated back-and-forth battle in game one.  Schreiner took the lead early on, scoring three runs on a trio of errors in the first inning to jump ahead 3-0.

Dallas answered right back in the top of the second with six runs on three hits, taking full advantage of three free passes and a pair of errors by Schreiner.  The first three runs of the inning were scored on a walk, an error, and a sac fly, but Mariah Hinojosa put the exclamation mark on the inning with a two-out, bases-loaded triple to put UD on top 6-3.

Four runs on five hits and an error in the third briefly gave Dallas a 10-3 lead.  Schreiner cut into the deficit with three runs in the third, then tied the game at 10-10 with four runs on just two hits in the fourth.

Dallas threatened with a runner on third and one out in the top of the fifth, but lined into a double play to end the inning.  Instead, Schreiner came up with a two-out knock in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-10 lead.

Emily Luna quickly tied it up with an RBI single in the sixth, then Katie Duffy-Relf singled home Jennifer Schmalz in the top of the seventh to give UD the lead for good, securing their first win in conference play.

It's the first win for the Crusaders against Schreiner since March 2016.

Game 2

Dallas 16, Schreiner 9

WP: SunnyDale Thies (4-12)

LP: Celina Marchan (2-10)

Dallas once again had to overcome an early deficit in game two of the series.  Schreiner wasted no time in waking up the bats, scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Crusaders threatened a number of times in the early innings, including loading the bases with two outs in the fourth, but they were held scoreless until the fifth inning  When Mariah Hinojosa tripled home two runs with two outs to make it a 4-2 game.

Schreiner answered back with one run in the fifth to extend their lead, but Dallas erupted for a massive 13-run sixth to take complete control of the game.

Dallas needed little help, with just one walk, one hit batter and one error in the inning.  They racked up 12 hits and scored eight of the 13 runs all with two outs.

In any other situation, Schreiner's four runs in the bottom half of the inning would be seen as a great response, but it, of course, was not nearly enough to make a game of it.  Dallas added another run in the top of the seventh for good measure to secure the win and the series.

This was the Crusaders' first series win of the season, their first series win since sweeping Dallas Christian in March 2023, and their first series win against Schreiner since sweeping them in April 2015.

Kailey Sweezey (pictured) tied the program single game record with three doubles, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.

The series will conclude with a single game tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
