Dallas Softball Comes Up Short vs Southwestern

April 19, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of their conference double header against Southwestern University on Friday, falling to 3-27 overall on the year and 0-17 in conference play.

Game 1

Dallas 1, Southwestern 7

WP: Sophia Ytuarte (7-5)

LP: Ava Trevino (0-12)

The Pirates jumped on the board early, scoring on a double steal before an out was recorded in the first inning.  A timely two-out single brought home another run to make it 2-0, with both runs being unearned after the inning started with an error.

Southwestern added runs in the third and fourth before tacking on three runs in the fifth, helped along by a pair of errors in the inning.

Dallas made solid contact and hit the ball hard all day, but couldn't find the gaps and struggled to put anything together until the seventh.  Abby Lasley drove in the only run of the day for Dallas with a two-out double in the seventh, driving in Jennifer Schmalz who kept the inning alive with a single to right.

Game 2

Dallas 0, Southwestern 5

WP: Madison Vela (2-10)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (3-12)

SunnyDale Thies nearly got through the first inning unscathed, but Riley Glenn-Millhouse opened the scoring with a two-out single to center to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

Thies pitched quite well for four innings, holding the Pirates scoreless in the second and third and was only scored on in the fourth because of an error to lead off the inning.

Southwestern did finally seem to crack the code in the fifth, however, as they scored three runs on four hits in the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Though Dallas was mostly quiet at the plate early on, they were a consistent threat in the later innings.  An error and single put two runners on with no outs in the fifth, but Dallas couldn't get past second base.  They had runners on second and third with one out, then loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but again couldn't make anything of it.  Down to their last three outs, Isabella Halsey led off the seventh with a single and made her way to third base eventually, but the Crusaders were held scoreless.
