Softball Drops Conference Opener to Centenary

March 16, 2024

SHREVEPORT, La. - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of their conference double header against Centenary College on Saturday, falling to 3-12 on the season and opening conference play 0-2.

Game 1

Dallas 0, Centenary 7

WP: Anna Scarbrock (4-4)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (1-5)

The Crusaders struggled to get anything going on offense in game one, managing just four baserunners on two hits in the game.

Centenary took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back, scoring both runs with two outs on an RBI double and a double steal.

Dallas threatened in the fifth, making use of an error, a wild pitch, and a hit batter in the inning.  Bre Barnes moved the runners over with a sac bunt to make it runners on second and third with two outs, but the Crusaders couldn't capitalize on the chance.  That would be their best chance of the game, as they were set down in order in the sixth and seventh.

Game 2

Dallas 1, Centenary 4

WP: Riley Myers (2-1)

LP: Ava Trevino (1-5)

SV: Emma Shepherd (1)

Dallas threatened early on, a hit batter and a single by Katie Duffy-Relf putting runners on first and second with one out in the first.  But the next two batters were put down in order, extinguishing the threat.

The Ladies were on the board first, again scoring with two outs in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0 on an RBI single.

Duffy-Relf came up clutch in the third inning with her second hit of the game, doubling home Isabella Hasley with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.  But Centenary answered right back with an RBI double of their own in the bottom half of the inning to restore their lead to 2-1.

Amarisa Garza led off the fourth inning with a walk, going on to reach third base on a sac bunt and a groundout, but that would be as far as she got.  Instead, the Ladies padded their lead by scraping across a run on a groundout to make it 3-1.

Dallas got runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings, but just couldn't come up with the timely hit to drive them in.  Centenary added an insurance run in the sixth and saw out the win to clinch the three game series.

If the weather allows, the series will conclude with a single game tomorrow at 12:00 pm.
