Softball Drops Season Opener to Williams Baptist

February 9, 2024

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team dropped both games of their opening day double-header against Williams Baptist University.

GAME 1 - Dallas 2, Williams Baptist 10

WP: Ember Caldwell (1-0)

LP: Ava Trevino (0-1)

After an uneventful first, the Eagles struck first in the top of the second, plating two runs.  The Crusaders did well to limit the damage, getting out of a bases-loaded, one out jam allowing just two runs.

Ava Trevino did well in the circle and the defense behind her to keep the Eagles at bay, as Williams Baptist stranded seven runners across the second, third, and fourth innings.  Though the Eagles were doing all of the hitting, Dallas was still very much in it up to this point, trailing just 4-1 going into the fifth.

That changed in the top of the fifth.  Some timely hits and untimely errors resulted in the Eagles plating four more runs, taking a commanding 8-1 lead.  They added two more runs in the seventh to go up 10-1, before Dallas pulled back a consolation run in the bottom half of the inning.

GAME 2 - Dallas 2, Williams Baptist 15 (5 Innings)

WP: Morgan Garner (1-0)

LP: Ava Aleman (0-1)

The Eagles wasted no time getting things going in game two, driving in four runs and three hits, all of which scored with two outs.  Kailey Sweezey replied with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, her first hit and RBI as a Crusader, to make it a 4-1 game.

Williams Baptist came right back with three runs in the second and one more in the third to take an 8-1 lead.  Dallas scraped one across in the bottom of the third to make it 8-2.

The flood gates opened in the fourth, as the Eagles piled on seven runs on six hits and could have had more as they left the bases loaded.  Dallas had no answer in the fourth or fifth, as Williams Baptist saw out the win.
