Softball Ends Season at TLU

SEGUIN, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team played their final conference series of the season this weekend, facing off against #2 ranked Texas Lutheran University.  The Bulldogs swept the series, giving the Crusaders a final overall record of 5-30 and an 0-21 record in conference play.

The Bulldogs were firmly in control all weekend.  Though the Crusaders battled, they were largely unable to get anything going at the plate, finding themselves on the wrong end of a no-hitter to open the series.  TLU's aggressive play on the basepaths and miscues by Dallas led to a seven-run first inning.  Two more runs in the second put the mercy rule in effect, and the game was done after five innings as Dallas had no answer offensively.

Game two was off to a much better start, with Dallas chasing just one run after two innings of play and playing spotless defense all game.  The Crusaders scored their only run off their only extra base hit of the weekend, with Jennifer Schmalz driving in Katie Duffy-Relf on a two-out RBI double to tie the game in the third inning.  The tie didn't last for long, as TLU answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame and steadily added runs over the next three innings.  They walked the game off with an RBI single, ending the game in the bottom of the sixth.

TLU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game three.  Dallas nearly escaped the inning with just one run allowed, but a two-out, two-run homer made it three runs in the inning.  Timely hits and miscues by the Dallas defense added six runs for TLU in the second, and one more run in the third made it 10-0 for the Bulldogs.  The Crusaders were silenced at the plate, giving TLU the five-inning win and the sweep, officially putting an end to the season for Dallas.
