St. Thomas Takes Two from Softball

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of their conference doubleheader against the University of St. Thomas on Saturday.  They fall to 5-23 on the year and 0-14 in conference play.

GAME 1 - Dallas 0, St. Thomas 12 (5 Innings)

WP: Bailey Tisdale (12-1)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (2-10)

The Celts pounced on UD right away, taking a 1-0 on the very first ball in play by Rebecca Archibald.  There was no one covering first base on the base hit bunt attempt by Archibald, leaving Mariah Hinojosa's throw to fly freely down the right field and allowing Archibald to come all the way around to score.  St. Thomas added two more runs before the inning was out to take a 3-0 lead.

SunnyDale Thies got out of a jam in the second inning, stranding two runners, but St. Thomas quickly struck again with three runs on four hits in the third.  It was all St. Thomas the rest of the way, as they extended their lead to 12 runs while holding UD to just two hits to end the game after five innings.

GAME 2 - Dallas 3, St. Thomas 13 (5 Innings)

WP: Allison Hughes (11-3)

LP: Caitlynn Freyman (2-10)

Game two got off to a much better start for UD, Caitlynn Freyman putting the Celts down in order in the first.  In the bottom of the first, Emily Luna and Abby Lasley led the game off by getting plunked by the first two pitches of the game, putting runners on first and second with no outs.

A double steal by Mariah Hinojosa and Luna put the Crusaders up 1-0, and an RBI single my Jennifer Schmalz made it 2-0 for UD.

The Celts pulled one back in the second, but the Crusaders were able to hold onto their leadgoing into the third inning.  The bats came alive for St. Thomas after that, however, as they piled on 14 runs over the next three innings.  The Crusaders pulled one back in the fourth, but went down in order in the fifth to end the game.

The series concludes with a single game tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
