Schreiner Takes Two From Dallas

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas lost both games of their conference souble-header against Chreiner University on Satuday.  They fall to 5-17 on the year and 0-8 in conference play.

GAME 1 - Dallas 5, Schreiner 19

WP: Kylynne Kusak (7-5)

LP: Caithlynn Freyman (2-8)

SV: Trysten Liesman (1)

Things got off to a bumpy start for the Crusaders.  Schreiner took a 5-0 lead after three inning on just two hits, taking advantage of six walks and three wild pitches to get runs across.  They made it 6-0 with a two-out RBI double in the fourth.

Dallas fought back in the bottom half of the inning.  A single by Abby Lasley and a double by Mariah Hinojosa put runners on second and third with one out for the Crusaders.  A bizarre play followed that got the Dallas on the board; a wild pitch to Katie Duffy-Relf went to the backstop, and Schreiner's catcher, Rebecca Gownley chased it down.  Lasley didn't break for the plate, as the ball took a firm bounce, but Gownley rushed the throw to the pitcher covering the plate and threw it wide into the infield, allowing Lasley to score and Hinojosa to reach third.

Then, on ball four to Duffy-Relf, Gownley tried to back-pick Hinojosa at third, but threw the ball down the left field line, bringing Hinojosa home and allowing Duffy-Relf to reach second.  After a single by Sara Hey put Duffy-Relf on third, Duffy-Relf scored the Crusaders' third run of the inning on a passed ball concluding a nightmarish defensive inning and giving Dallas new life in the game.

The Crusaders had two golden opportunities to cut into the deficit.  They loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth and sixth innings, but failed to score in either inning.  The Mountaineers added a run in the fifth, two in the sixth, before the floodgates burst in the seventh as they piled on 10 runs on 10 hits to effectively put the nail in the coffin.

Dallas once again loaded the bases in the seventh, this time with two outs.  They would plate two more runs with singles by Jennifer Schmalz and SunnyDale Thies, but the rally would end there.

Sara Hey was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases in the game.

GAME 2 - Dallas 5, Schreiner 10

WP: Kaedyn Filburn (1-3)

LP: SunnyDale Thies (2-6)

Both offenses were put down in order to start the game.  SunnyDale Thies retired her first two batters of the second inning, making it five straight batters retired, but a walk and two knocks loaded the bases with two outs and Schreiner plated the first run of the game on a passed ball.

The Mountaineers took a comfortable 8-0 lead after four innings, holding the Crusaders to just one hit in that span.

The Crusaders were one out away from being mercy-ruled when Abby Kaskey loaded the bases for the fourth time of the day with a two-out walk.  But Dallas was given life when Lizette Sosa came around to score on a wild pitch, then Mariah Hinojosa shot a two-RBI single through the right side to make it an 8-3 game.

Hinojosa would unfortunately give both of those runs back in the sixth with a pair of atypical errors, a wild throw down the right field line and a throw in the dirt that let two runners cross the plate.

Dallas pulled a couple of runs across in the seventh, but couldn't do any more damage than that as Thies was doubled off on a liner to first base to end the makings of a late rally.

The series concludes tomorrow with a single game.  First pitch has been pushed to 11:00 a.m. to try and avoid looming inclement weather.
