Pirates Pull Away Late to Sweep Crusaders

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost their conference matchup against Southwestern University on Sunday.  The Pirates completed the series sweep, as UD falls to 5-13 on the year and 0-6 in conference play.

Dallas 2, Southwestern 6

WP: Mattigan Aga (3-2)

LP: Caitlynn Freyman (2-6)

In the first inning, Jennifer Schmalz reached on a single and stole second, then made it to third with two outs to put the Crusaders 90 feet away from striking first.  But she was stranded, and the Pirates took advantage of a two-out error to take a 1-0 lead in the first.

Dallas managed a couple of baserunners across the next four innings, but never made it past second.  The Pirates put up three runs in fifth thanks to a triple and a sac fly to make it a 4-0 game, but the Crusaders responded with a timely two-out, two RBI double by Katie Duffy-Relf in the sixth to halve the deficit.

Southwestern extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth, takind advantage of four free passes issued by Dallas.  A fielder's choice and a sac fly brought home two more runs, and Dallas had no response in the seventh as the Pirates sealed the win and completed the series sweep.
