Crusaders Drop Two at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost both games of their conference double-header against Southwestern University on Saturday.  They fall to 5-12 on the year and 0-5 in conference play.

GAME 1 - Dallas 0, Southwestern 7

WP: Madison Vela (5-5)

LP: Caitlynn Freyman (2-5)

The Crusaders looked to strike in the first inning, getting runners on first and second with two outs.  But they stranded the runners, and that would be the closest they came to scoring until the fourth inning.

Now down by two, after the Pirates plated two runs in the bottom of the third, a walk and an error with two outs would have put a runner on third with two outs, but Sara Hey was thrown out trying to extend to second base after the error to end the threat.

Southwestern put up five runs on four hits in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.  Dallas was set down in order in the fifth in sixth and managed to get two more runners aboard with two outs in the seventh, but couldn't make anything of it.  The Pirates sealed the 7-0 win, holding the Crusaders hitless.

GAME 2 - Dallas 1, Soutwhestern 9 (5 Innings)

WP: Hailey Arrington (5-5)

LP: SunnyDale  Thies (2-4)

The Pireates took an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second.  The Crusaders had runners on second in the first and second innings thanks to doubles by Maria Hinojosa and Jennifer Schmalz, but UD couldn't capitalize in either inning.

Hinojosa got the Crusaders on the board in the third with an RBI double, driving home Sara Hey who scored from first.

After two quiet innings, the Pirates came up with some timely hits and made the most out of defensive miscues by Dallas to pile on the runs in the fifth.  They walked off the game, scoring two runs on an error to win the game via mercy.

The series will conclude tomorrow (March 26) with a single game at 1:00 p.m.
