UD Drops Two to Schreiner

Irving, TX  - The University of Dallas softball team fell in the first two games of their three game series against Schreiner Saturday.  Dallas scored first, and the two teams played evenly at 2-2 until the fifth inning.  In the bottom of the fifth, Schreiner picked up three unearned runs, and scratched across two more runs in the sixth to close out game one 7-2.  In game two, the teams were again even, this time at 1-1 through one.  However, the Mountaineers busted across four runs in the second at six in the fifth to achieve an 11-5 victory.

In the first inning of game one, Crusaders center fielder Emily Luna started off the game with a base on ball, then proceeded to steal both second and third.  With two outs, designated player Annabel Anderson doubled in Luna to put Dallas up 1-0.

 

In the bottom of the inning, Mountaineer shortstop Marley Carrizales started off the inning with a single.  After a stolen base and two walks, left fielder Elicia Gonzales singled with one out to drive in Carrizales to tie the game at 1-1.

 

In the second, Schreiner struck again. With two outs and a runner on second, right fielder Danielle Pedraza doubled to score Carrizales for her second run of the game at a 2-1 Schreiner lead.

 

Dallas would even things up in the fourth, as second baseman Bri Hale singled and stole second with one one.  After reaching third on an error, left fielder Sara Hey singled to left scoring Hale, but second runner Luna was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

 

In the fifth inning, Schreiner started the inning with a hit batter and a single.  Gonzales then reached on an error by pitcher Karina Campo, scoring pinch runner Zoie Ramirez from second.  Then pitcher Bri Wodtke sacrificed to center to score Kennedy Moody from third.  After a stolen base, an error and a walk, center fielder Malorie Solis sacrificed to right to score Gonzales to make the game 5-2.

 

Schreiner added two more in the sixth, as Carrizales started the inning with a walk.  One out and one stolen base later, Carrizales scored on an RBI single by designated player Haley Pair.  After Moody struck out and Gonzales walked, Wodtke single for her second RBI of the game, scoring pinch runner Ashley Schaub for the final run of the game.

In game two, Dallas scored first as Luna reached base again to lead off the game this time with a single.  After a stolen base and a strike out, right fielder Jennifer Schmalz singled to drive in Luna to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.

Schreiner would equalize immediately.  In the bottom of the inning, Pedraza doubled, and then after advancing to third on a wild pitch, scored on a double by Pair.

Dallas retook the lead in the top of the second as shortstop Lizette Sosa reached on an error by third baseman Taci Tatum.  Three batters later with two outs, Luna singled to plate Sosa for a 2-1 UD lead.

Schreiner jumped ahead in the bottom of the inning as the first three batters reached base on a walk, and hit by pitch, and a single.  Pitcher Kaylee Culpepper was then thrown at home on a fielder's choice, but then shortstop Analysa Vasquez scored on a single by Pair to tie the game.  After Moody was hit by a pitch, and Solis scored on a wild pitch.  Gonzales then reached on an error which scored Pair for a 4-2 Schreiner lead.

Dallas inched back in the fourth inning as Hale singled, then advanced to second on a groundout, and then scored on an RBI single by Luna.

The Crusaders captured the lead one more time in the top of the fifth, as Anderson singled to lead off the inning.  Campo then reached on an error, and then both runners advanced on a groundout by third baseman Trinity Aguero.  Sosa then reached on an RBI fielder's choice as Anderson scored, and then Campo scored on an RBI groundout by Hale to give UD a 5-4 lead.

The Mountaineers then exploded in the bottom of the fifth as Culpepper started the inning off with a walk, followed by a Carrizales single.  After the runners advanced on an error, pinch runner Schaub then scored on a wild pitch.  Carrizales then scored on an RBI single by Pedraza.  Wodtke pinch hit for Solis, who singled, and then UD recorded the first out of the inning by striking out Pair.  Moody then singled in Pedraza, Gonzales walked, and then second baseman Annie Wallace drove in Solis, who came back into the game to run for Wodtke.  Tatum then rounded out the scoring with a two RBI single to put the game at its eventual final score of 11-5.

With the losses Dallas falls to 5-27 (2-12), and with the wins Schreiner improves to 11-22 (8-6).  The teams finish up the series with one more game on Sunday in Kerrville at noon central time.
