Late Rally Gives Trinity the Win

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost their conference game with Trinity University on Sunday.  Trinity completed the series sweep, as the Crusaders fall to 2-10 in conference play.

Game Information - Dallas 1, Trinity 10 (6 Innings)

WP: Cat Patterson (11-7)

LP: Caitlynn Freyman (1-5)

After an uneventful first inning, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the second and could have had more, but Caitlynn Freyman got out of the jam with limited damage, stranding two runners.  Hits were few and far between for both teams through five innings, but Trinity managed to extend their lead to 3-1; the Crusaders got on the board with an RBI single by Karina Campo in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Lizette Sosa who led off the inning with a walk.

Though the game was close to this point, disaster struck for the Crusaders in a bizarre sixth inning.  In what should have been the first out of the inning, Sammie Whitman reached base safely on a sac bunt.  Trinity Augero fielded the ball and threw it to Sosa at first, beating Whitman by at least a full step.  To most observers, Whitman collided with the glove hand of Sosa and knocked the ball free, meaning the runner should be out on the play and even potentially called out for interference.  Instead, it was ruled that Sosa simply dropped the ball, giving Trinity runners on first and third with no outs and sticking Sosa with the error on the play.

The shenaningans continued.  After singling in a run, Jessica Lloyd was retroactively called out and her entire at-bat nullified because she had not re-entered the game properly.  Then, with two outs and only three runs crossing the plate at this point, a soft liner up the middle saw Sosa and Macy Waddell both heading for the ball at full speed.  Neither one called for the ball, and it hit Waddell in the glove as the two collided and the ball fell to the ground, allowing two more runs to score.

Trinity rode the artificial wave of momentum and ended up tacking on seven runs in the inning.  The Crusaders were now down to their final three outs, trailing by nine runs.  Adding insult to injury, the final called strike of the game was nowhere near the zone.  Dallas would strand their one runner as Trinity capped off the series.
