Crusaders Split with Sewanee

Irving, TX  - The University of Dallas softball team split a two game series against Sewanee University on Saturday.  Dallas seized the lead, 5-2, in the fifth inning of game one off multiple extra base hits.  Dallas added two more in the sixth, including one off a home run by Lizette Sosa, for the eventual victorious game one final score of 7-2.  In game two, the teams found themselves tied again at 2-2.  However, this time it was Sewanee who rallied ahead for three runs in the third inning and never looked back.  Sewanee added at least one run in each inning for the rest of the game to win game two 10-2.

Sewanee started off the scoring in the second inning as they put runners on first and second with one out.  First baseman Kendall Goodrum then doubled to left to score third baseman Sarah Wright and advance shortstop Eve Bournias to third.  The Tigers then scored a run on a botched defensive play by the Crusaders as the next batter, designated player Samantha Dean, hit into a fielder's choice back to pitcher Karina Campo.  Bournias was caught in a run down, but scored after Dallas third baseman Trinity Aguero dropped the throw from catcher Lizette Sosa.

UD got one back in the bottom of the second as the Crusaders started the inning with three straight singles.  After second baseman Caitlynn Freyman fouled out to third, Aguero hit into a fielder's choice as left fielder Jennifer Schmalz was thrown out at home.  Center fielder Emily Luna then singled to right to drive in pinch runner Sara Hey to half the deficit at 2-1.

In the third inning, Dallas tied the game.  With two outs and a runner on second, designated player Bri Hale reached on an error by right fielder Maggie Willis, and Schmalz scored to make the score 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dallas quickly hit into two outs before they finally picked up a base runner.  Schmalz singled up the middle, Hale singled to left, and then right fielder Annabel Anderson doubled to right to drive in both runners to put Dallas ahead 4-2.  Freyman then tripled to center to plate Anderson to give the Crusaders a 5-2 lead.

Dallas tacked on two more in the sixth.  With one out and no one on, Sosa hit a solo home run to left field for her first collegiate career home run.  After a single and a walk, Schmalz doubled to left to score first baseman Madison Coutts for the final run of the game at 7-2.

In game two, Sewanee got on the board first again this time in the first inning.  With a runner on second and two outs, third baseman Alice Charboneau tripled to right field to score Willis.  Bournias then reached on an error by Aguero, and Charboneau scored to make the game 2-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Dallas put runners on second and third with no outs.  Coutts hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center, scoring Luna from third.  On the same play, Sosa was caught leading too far off second on the fly ball and was doubled up at second for two outs.

Dallas put up another run in the bottom of the second.  After Schmalz singled to left and stole second, Anderson doubled to right for an RBI, easily driving in Schmalz.

In the third inning, with one on and one out Charboneau tripled to center for an RBI.  Bournias then walked and stole second, and two batters later second baseman Hanna Judycki singled up the middle to score both runners to give Sewanee a 5-2 lead.

In the fourth inning, Sewanee added another run.  With two outs, Charboneau drove in another run, this time on a single, to score Willis.  Dallas limited the damage in the fourth as earlier in the inning they cut down a potential run on a double steal attempt by Sewanee.  As Willis stole second, game two second baseman Sosa received the throw from game two catcher Coutts, and returned the throw home in time to get Dean at the plate.

In the fifth inning, the Tigers picked up two more runs.  With two on and two outs Willis dunked a single into shallow left field down the line as Judycki and game two designated player Peri Prestwood came in to score.

In the sixth inning, Sewanee started the inning with four straight hits, culminating with an RBI single by Prestwood to score Wright.  In the next at-bat, Judycki flew out to right and Charboneau attempted to score on the play.  However, Anderson mowed down Charboneau at the plate for a double play to save a run.

In the seventh inning, Sewanee put up their final run of the game.  After two Tigers reached base as hit batsmen, with two outs Charboneau earned her fourth RBI on the day off a double to left.  Dean scored and Sewanee extended their lead to the eventual final score of 10-2.

With the split, UD's record moves to 5-16 (2-4) while Sewanee moves to 3-17 (1-11).  Dallas continues their season with conference games on the road against Centenary College of Louisiana on Saturday and Sunday, March 26 and 27.  Game Times will be at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on Saturday and 12:00 PM on Sunday.  All times are Central.
