Crusaders Split with Yellow Jackets

BROWNWOOD, TX - The University of Dallas softball team split their non-conference double header with Howard Payne University on Thursday afternoon. They improve to 4-16 on the year, picking up their first road win of the season.

Game 1 - Dallas 7, Howard Payne 3

WP: Karina Campo (3-7)
LP: Tara Campos (0-1)

The Crusaders put up a crooked number in a hurry with a big first inning. Karina Campo helped her own cause with a bases-clearing double to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead in the first.
Dallas wasn't done, as Caitlynn Freyman and Emily Luna would each drive in runs before the inning was out, giving the Crusaders a 6-0 lead after just a half inning.

The Yellow Jackets would score a pair of unearned runs in the second and an earned run in the fourth on a bases loaded fielder's choice, but that would be all the scoring HPU could manage off Campo, who would go the full seven
innings allowing just one earned run on six hits. She would be the standout performer in this game, going 2-4 with two doubles and four RBI.

Game 2 - Dallas 2, Howard Payne 5

WP: Bree Cason (2-4)
LP: Devinne Green (0-7)

Game two could have easily gone either way. The two sides traded blows in the first inning to a 1-1 draw, before Dallas took a brief lead with another RBI base hit for Karina Campo in the third.
The Crusaders had the bases loaded with one out and could have easily struck for more runs, but the Yellow Jackets got out of the jam and stranded all three runners.

Instead, it was the Yellow Jackets who capitalized, scoring three runs on three hits by stealing third base twice in the inning. Baserunners were not particularly plentiful for either team the remainder of the game, though HPU
added one more run to their tally in the fourth. The Crusaders had a couple of chances to chip away, but couldn't get anything across. The Yellow Jackets would see out the tight win to split the day.

Emily Luna and Lizette Sosa each went 2-3 in the game, Sosa with one of the Crusaders two RBI for the game. Caitlynn Freyman came in and threw two scoreless innings of relief for Devinne Green, who went four innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
