Crusaders Swept by Fontbonne

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost their non-conference double header with Fontbonne University this evening.  They fall to 3-12 on the year.

Game 1 - Dallas 2, Fontbonne 9

WP: Abyy Richmond (1-0)

LP: Caitlynn Freyman (1-1)

Things were back and forth early on in game one.  The griffins struck first with a sac fly in the first, Lizette Sosa tripled and was brought in on a Jennifer Schmalz single to even it up, then the Griffins homered to reclaim the lead at 2-1 in the second.  Dallas left runners on in the second and third; they had runners on first and second with no outs in the third, but a double play and a groundout quickly snuffed out the threat.  Fontbonne added a run in the third and Dallas pulled one back on an error by the third baseman to make it 3-2 Griffins after four innings.

Up to this point, hits had been relatively hard to come by for both teams, with neither side able to string together more than two in a single inning.  But the Griffins' bats came alive in the fifth, driving in four runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead.  The Crusaders bats couldn't answer back, and the Griffins added a pair of runs for good measure to win game one 9-2.

Game 2 - Dallas 4, Fontbonne 14

WP: Hailey Kutz (1-0)

LP: Devinne Green (0-6)

After a quiet first inning, Fontbonne came out swinging in game two.  They took a 4-0 lead on three hits and an error in the second inning and never looked back, taking firm control of the game as the Crusaders struggled to answer back at the plate.  The griffins made it 10-0 with an even bigger third inning, and 14-0 with four runs on four hits in the fourth.

Dallas had the chance to strike back in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with one out.  But a pair of strikeouts ended the inning and killed the would-be rally.  They would have a nearly identical chance the next inning, once again loading the bases with one out.  After a strikeout, Annabel Anderson stepped up to the plate with two outs.  Down to the Crusaders last strike, she ripped a bases clearing double in the left-center gap to make it 14-4.  It would be too little, too late, however, as the Crusaders needed to score seven runs to avoid the mercy rule.  Anderson's double would be the last gasp for the Crusaders as Fontbonne sealed the sweep.

Anderson was 3-3- in the game, accounting for all three of the Crusader's RBI's.
