Crusaders Drop Pair to Schreiner to Open Final Home SCAC Series

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team dropped two games against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Schreiner University. Game one was close, as the Crusaders scored two in the bottom of the seventh of a one-run heartbreaker. Game two was all Mountaineers, as the guests posted a 12-1 victory.

The series opener was a low scoring contest, as the Mountaineers had the only runs through five innings. A two-spot in the second provided the early momentum. Carrie Fulton tripled to right center to score Marisa Hernandez. An error allowed Fulton to score later in the frame.

The next scoring play was for Schreiner in the sixth. Fulton came up with her second extra base hit and RBI in the game, as she doubled to the same place as the triple and Hernandez scored a second time.

Dallas' offense had three hits and four walks off the starter for the Mountaineers, Bri Wodtke. She had five strikeouts and kept UD off the board for 5.2 innings. The Crusaders had left two on base in the first inning, and their next opportunity with a runner in scoring position was in the home fifth. A two-out rally attempt started with Annabel Anderson (Midlothian, Texas) smacking a double for one of her game-high three hits. Emily Martin (San Jose, Calif.) drew one of her three walks and Madison Coutts (Tampa, Fla.) reached on an error by third base to load the bases. UD left the runners there though.

A single by Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) led off the sixth for UD after trailing by three, but the team did not advance anyone past first in that frame. Schreiner had two on in the seventh, but a strikeout from Martin left the runners on first and second.

The Crusaders had life in their final at bat as Devinne Green bunted for a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Anderson singled through the left side and Martin took her third free pass in a row to jam the bases. The Mountaineers got the next two outs on a force play at home and strikeout. Campo laced a single up the middle to score Anderson and Martin. However, a good throw through from center field and relay by the catcher would allow Schreiner to catch Campo trying to advance to second and the game concluded there.

Dallas was outhit 8-6. Anderson and Campo had multiple hit games. Campo went five strong innings with five hits and an earned run allowed. She walked one and struck out two. Martin threw the last two innings and had a strikeout.

Schreiner had a quartet of hitters with a pair apiece. Marley Carrizales, Wodtke, Hannah Kollmansberger, and Fulton formed the group. Culpepper notched the save for Schreiner.

A six-run fifth capped the 13-hit outburst for the Mountaineers. Wodtke drove in four runs and Culpepper and Fulton each had three-RBI games. Wodtke and Culpepper each had a home run.

UD got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with Coutts getting a hit to left field and Karly Girod (Fort Worth, Texas) scored for the home team to avoid a shutout.

Campo started the game again and went two innings. Green threw to 2.1 and Alissa Dutton (Houston, Texas) 0.2 innings finished things up in the circle. UD had six hits and was led by Anderson with another multi-hit performance (2-3). Caitlyn Stevenson (Henderson, Nev.) and Girod also had base knocks.
