Crusaders Split Tuesday with Ozarks; Campo leads in Game 2 on Both Sides of the Ball

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The University of Dallas softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at University of the Ozarks on Tuesday afternoon. After falling in game one, the Crusaders snapped an 11-game slide by scoring four unanswered runs after Ozarks had knotted the score in the third inning. Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) ripped a three-run home run that accounted for most of her four runs driven in, and she also got it done in the circle nearing a complete game and earning her first win in the circle this year.

The Crusaders jumped on top first with an RBI double by Madison Coutts in the third inning. Her knock toward right center scored Emily Martin (San Jose, Calif.).

UD starter Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) worked three scoreless innings and had given up two harmless singles that saw the runners not advance any further.

The Eagles broke through with a three-run fourth and would score the next two frames to put the game out of reach. Riki Haase, who went a perfect 4-for-4 to lead Ozarks, started the fourth with a single through the right side of the infield. A couple of errors loaded the bases and then Sierra Jasna hit the go-ahead single that plated a pair of runs. She advanced on the third error of the inning and game for UD. Caley Robles doubled in the third run.

Ozarks mustered six hits that included two doubles by Brittney Dean and Jasna, and a home run by Haase. Jasna finished with three RBi and had the other multi-hit game for UO.

Annabel Anderson (Midlothian, Texas) smacked her third home run of the season in the sixth inning to account for UD's other run. She now has five for her career. Rylee Sundberg (Phoenix, Ariz.) made her first starts of her career as the designated player and recorded her first collegiate hit to start the third inning. Martin had followed with the other hit. Campo tallied the remaining of UD's five hits.

Watts finished with five earned runs allowed in four innings. Campo completed the last two innings.

Jaela Martin hurled seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits. She walked none and struck out two.

The Eagles got on the board in the first inning on a single by Allyson Fultz.

It was the Crusaders turn to put up four runs, coming in the third inning to grab the advantage. Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) singled to right field and scored Martin. Cordova and Coutts each advanced a base. Although it didn't matter, as Campo launched her first home run of the season and first since 2019 when she had two her freshman campaign.

Ozarks responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie things at four. Haase stayed hot with a double and two runs scored, one from the hit and one from an error. Blaise English singled in the tying run.

With a brand new ballgame, Campo locked down with the go-ahead run at third and induced a popup to herself and Coutts threw out Macy Pelts trying to steal.

Both sides went scoreless in the fourth, and then UD took the lead for good with a run in the fifth and had at least one in its last three innings to hit. Watts reached on an error to score her senior teammate Cordova. In the sixth inning, Anderson stole second and Devinne Green (Riverside, Calif.) was able to swipe home plate on the throw down. Campo added a single to left that plated Anderson a few batters later. Anderson singled up the middle in the seventh to score Bri Hale (Austin, Texas) for the final run.

Campo got two outs in the seventh, but Alissa Dutton (Houston, Texas) was summoned for her first college softball game to get the final out. She would after Pelts singled through the right side, but Anderson came up firing for her fifth outfield assist to nab a runner advancing to third to finish the game.

Six of the first seven hitters contributed to all 12 of Dallas' hits and the first five had multiple hits led by Campo with a 3-for-4. Anderson, Martin, Coutts, and Cordova all had a pair.

Both teams totaled 12 hits and committed five errors.

Campo spread out 11 hits allowed and gave up four runs and also had a walk and two strikeouts.

Pelts led the Eagles with a perfect 4-for-4, while Haase and Britney Kirk went 2-for-3 and Haase scored two runs. Fults allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. Kirk threw the last 4.2 innings, but did not give up an earned run. She fanned four.

Dallas plays its final home series this Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders both days versus Schreiner University. The twinbill on Saturday is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. The Sunday game is at 12 p.m. and will also be "Senior Day."
