Crusaders Swept by Centenary on Sunday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team dropped the final game of the weekend Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series with Centenary College on Sunday. Dallas scored first to take its only lead of the three-game set, but the opposition found two runs in the second and fourth and were able to hold things from there. The Crusaders battled and had a couple strong defensive plays to keep the game manageable. Centenary busted out 13 hits, but were limited in times crossing home.

Game Information

Team Scores: Centenary (4), Dallas (1)

Team Records: Centenary (12-11, 5-3 SCAC), Dallas (2-8, 2-7 SCAC)

Pitcher Records: W) Hunter (4-2), L) Watts (1-5), S) Leger (4)

The Crusaders held the Ladies scoreless in the first inning and sat the side in order on ground outs. That was the first time in seven-home games on this stretch UD did not allow the opponent a first inning run. The last time that feat happened was the season opener at Southwestern University. That was also the only other game UD started with a lead.

Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) smacked a double to right center and scored Brenna Kelly (Missouri City, Texas). In nine games, the outfielder has tallied seven doubles. Her two-baggers have come in six-of-seven games on this home stand.

The score did flip in the next half inning with Erin Lewis clobbering a double to left center and scored two runs. Lewis was the damaging hitter with her third RBI of the game with a single off down the left field line. Mallory Stout had the other RBI in the fourth with a single to left center.

Cordova picked up two of the team's four hits. Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) and Bonnie Swinnea (Kosse, Texas) recorded the other base knocks. Kelly stole a base for UD.

UD's best chance to move in was the bottom of the fourth. A pair of the singles happened for the Crusaders but nothing amounted from it. The Crusaders would not reach the last time through the batting lineup.

Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) battled and allowed four runs on 13 hits in seven innings. She also struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Kirstyn Gomez threw four innings in the start and allowed a run on four hits and walked none and two strikeouts. Hunter and Leger combined for the last three innings of softball. The trio of arms combined for five strikeouts.

Dallas finishes up the 10-game stretch of home games this week with University of St. Thomas coming to visity on April 1 and 2.
