UD Softball Downed by Centenary in Doubleheader on Saturday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team dropped a pair of games to start its weekend Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series with Centenary College. Game one saw the Ladies jump ahead 6-0 in the first inning and Hailee Leger neared a no-hitter through the five-inning final. Game two was another quick start offensively for the visitors, but Dallas battled back and were a couple swings away from narrowing the gap.

Centenary took control early with the first two batters reaching on a walk and hit by pitch. After an our moved the runners to scoring position, Cambry Bates knocked them home with a three-run shot over the left field wall. The Ladies doubled the lead that inning with three more runs. Mackenzie Cox singled through the left side to plate a pair of runs.

UD got its first runner two batters into the game as Madison Coutts (Tampa, Fla.) walked.

Erin Lewis was responsible for the remaining Centenary runs with a single in the third and home run to left in the fifth.

Brenna Kelly (Missouri City, Texas) ripped a hard ball to left to start the fifth and breakup the no hitter. Leger had no issues other than that pair of baserunners. Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) pitched for the first time in this game and came out in relief. She was solid with 4.1 innings and two runs allowed on six hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Leger went the distance for the Ladies and had five strikeouts.

The Ladies were effective when getting runs in this game as they put up two runs in a trio of innings that were spread through the first four. Centenary tallied 10 hits as well. Kaylea Patridge started her 3-for-4 game with a hit in the first inning and drove in one-of-three runners she would in the game. Patridge advanced to second on the throw and later would come home as part of a successful double steal. The three-hole hitter for Centenary got to display her speed in the third with an inside the park home run to right field that skipped past.

 

Britlyn Garrett tripled for Centenary's first extra-base hit to make it a 4-0 score.

 

The Crusaders got a run back in the bottom of the third as Coutts reached on a throwing error by the second baseman. Annabel Anderson (Midlothian, Texas) scored.

 

Patridge was in the middle of Centenary's scoring in the top of the fourth on an error by Dallas.

 

Campo got the team's lone RBI on the day with a hit to right center. Bri Hale (Austin, Texas) scored.

 

Bates went yard for the second time in the series by tucking hers inside the left field foul pole.

 

Four of UD's six hits were doubles.

 

Leger went 2.2 innings to start the game and fanned three. Ashley Hunter got the ball and picked up the win as she worked around a run earned on four hits and two walks in 2.2 innings. Bates finished off the last five outs in the circle.

 

Emily Martin (San Jose, Calif.) threw seven innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits. She walked four and struck out two.

 

Dallas and Centenary wrap up the series at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
