UD Softball Drops Opening-Weekend series against Southwestern University

GEROGETOWN, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team opened the 2021 season and conference part of its schedule this Saturday for a doubleheader and Sunday for the finale.

After UD dropped a tough one in the first game, the Pirates earned the walk-off in the bottom of the seventh. The remaining two games were run-ruled in favor the Southwestern University.

The Crusaders took the early lead in the second inning on a double by Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) that drove in Brianna Hale (Austin, Texas). Cordova had one of the team's two extra-base hits. Brenna Kelly (Missouri City, Texas) debuted with one-of-two multiple hit days for the team. Kelly also had a base-swipe. Hale joined the freshman as the other double in the box score.

Maggie Watts (Arcadia, Texas) pitched a fantastic 6.2 innings. She worked around six hits and three walks.

UD outhit the Pirates 7-6 but committed four errors. 


GAME 2 INFORMATION

Southwestern University pounded eight runs on 10 hits over UD. A two-run first put the team in an early deficit that would expand with six runs over the last three innings of the run-ruled game.

Dallas was limited to three hits, all by hitter spots: 2, 3, and 4 in the lineup. Madison Coutts (Tampa Bay, Fla.), Annabel Anderson (Midlothian, Texas), and Kelly had the game knocks for the guests.

Devinne Green (Riverside, Calif.) allowed two runs on two walks and a hit as the pitcher. Emily Martin (San Jose, Calfi.) pitched 4.1 innings before the Pirates reached the eigh-run threshold in softball.

Meddie Mefford hit a home run that highlighted a two-for-three with an RBI and two runs scored. Jessey Nunez also had two hits in three at bats and with a pair of RBI. Montemayor in the circle a second straight game with just three hits surrendered and two walks.

The Crusaders could not contain a strong Southwestern offense that crossed the plate 12 times in the second inning en route to run-ruled finish. The Pirates also totaled 19 hits that was highlighted by Montemayor going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI. Mefford, Jessey Nunez, and Kaylee White all had a trio of ribbies. White and Rylee Rudloff ach scored three times. The team totaled five doubles and a triple.

Montemayor earned her third win in as many games for SU in the circle. She pitched every inning this weekend.

Dallas generated all its runs on one swing by Kelly in the fifth with her first collegiate home run. Anderson added a 2-for-2 game.

Dallas remains on the road next weekend and is playing a non-conference foe in University of the Ozarks on Saturday, March 13. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
