UD Cross Country Has Impressive Showing at NEAC Conference Meet

This weekend the men’s and women’s Cross Country teams competed in the North Eastern Athletic Conference championships in Utica, NY. This was the cross country teams’ seventh meet of the year, and it featured an 8k race for the men and a 5k for the women.

The men’s team, led by senior Greg Pivarunas (Elma, NY/St. Francis H.S.), finished 3rd out of 9 teams with a total 98 points. Pivarunas led the UD team with a time of 28:09, good enough to place him 2nd overall for the meet. Finishing 2nd on the team, and 9th overall was freshman Alex Bukaty (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.) with a time of 30:11. 26th overall was freshman Clinton Heyer (Waterford, WI/Waterford Union H.S.) with a time of 32:35. Finishing 36th was freshman Paul Sampson (Stayton, OR/Regis H.S.) recording a time of 33:48. Close behind him was junior Billy Gibula (Richmond, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep) finishing 40th with a time of 34:31. 57th overall, was junior Andrew Natali (Appleton, WI/Appleton North H.S).

Finishing 4th overall, and leading the UD team in the women 5k was senior Angela Cuba (Holiday, TX/Holiday H.S.) with a time of 21:18. Behind her, and 9th overall with a time of 23:11 was freshman Megan Deras (Omaha, NE/Duchesne Academy), at 15th overall with a 24:12 was sophomore Heather Cappozzella (Enid, OK/Enid H.S.). She was followed by junior Aida Manganiello (Lindale, TX/Lindale H.S.) who finished 25th overall and clocked in at 24:58. Finishing at 35th, in 26:40 was freshman Catherine Piescik (Vienna, VA/Home School). This effort left the women’s team at 2nd overall out of 11 teams with a total of 85 points.

At the conclusion of the meet, five UD runners were named to the NEAC All-Conference teams. Pivarunas and Cuba made the first team, Bukaty and Deras made the second team, and Capozzella was named to the third team.

After the strong finishes from both UD squads, UD cross country continues their season on November 14th in Greensboro, NC at the NCAA DIII South/Southeast Region meet.
