Track and Field Competes at Hendrix College Alumni Open

CONWAY Ar. - The University of Dallas men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Hendrix College Alumni Open on Friday, competing against NAIA, NCAA Division II and Division III teams.  This serves as the Crusaders spring season opener, while most other teams have competed in a full indoor season prior to this weekend.

James Latour was the lone Crusader on the men's side to compete this weekend, posting a time of 19:06.79 in his first 5k of the year.  Senior Nico Walz was unavailable due to senior thesis requirements.

On the women's side, senior Melissa Gabino competed in her first ever 800m, posting a time of 3:20.32.  Teresa Cashen ran the 800m alongside her, finishing in 2:48.17.  Cashen also ran the 400m alongside Brenda Chicas; Cashen finished in 1:09.06, while Chicas finished in 2:05.60.

Bailey Haas made a name for herself in her track and field debut.  She placed 6th in the 100m with a time of 13.15, beating 11 Division II and NAIA athletes as well as two other Division III athletes.  She also placed eighth in the 200m with a time of 27.29, ,beating 12 Division II and NAIA athletes along the way.

"We're a small team again this year, but once again we have a very bright spark, this time in Bailey Haas," said head coach Nick Schneigert.  "Much like Johny Olmsted and Anna Wilgenbusch before her, I think Bailey can have a tremendous impact on the team."

The Crusaders will head to Lancaster, Texas next weekend to compete in the Jet Relays on Saturday, March 9.
