Olmsted Competes at Tom Tellez Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas - Johnny Olmsted of UD track and field continued his pursuit of a spot in the NCAA National Championships by competing in the Tom Tellez Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston, on Friday.

Currently hovering around the mid-30's on the leaderboards, Olmsted likely needs to finish under 48 seconds to have a chance at cracking through to the top 22 runners to make it to Nationals.  He took a great leap in the right direction last week at the Oliver Jackson Twilight last week, where he broke his school record in the 400m for the third time this season, finishing third while posting a time of 48.39.

At the Tom Tellez Invitational, Olmsted took fifth with a time of 48.71 on a warm, muggy Houston evening.

"He's very close, but not quite there yet," said head coach Nick Schneigert.  "He's unlucky too that that weather is starting to heat up as the season is ending, but he's going out there and giving it his all in these tough conditions.  he and I will meet and decide whether or not the season ends here, or if we give it one last go at Trinity's Last Chance Meet."

Trinity's Last Chance Meet is scheduled for Sunday, May 14.
