Crusaders Finish Strong, Olmsted Claims 400m Title at SCAC Championship

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas men's and women's track and field team wrapped up two days of competition at the SCAC Championship hosted by Southwestern University on Sunday.  The Crusaders finished strong, set a slew of new PR's in their final meet of the season.

Nico Walz and James Latour represented Dallas in the 5000m and 10,000m races.  In the 10,000m, Walz finishied in 37:09.63, and Latour finished in 37:46.85.  In the 5000m, Latour posted a time of 18.31.94 and Walz set a new PR with a time of 17:20.79.

Joseph Rodda and Caleb Clayton ran the mid-distance races, posting times of of 4:56.41 and 5:09.13 in the 1500m.  In the 800m, Rodda posted a new PR of 2:10.85, and Clayton posted his season best of 2:21.91.

The highlight of the track events was Johny Olmsted.  After posting a PR of 22.33 in the 200m, Olmsted went on to once again shatter his own program record, running the 400m in 48.43 to win the first championship for UD track and field since Kevin McGuirk won the 400m hurdles at the 2019 SCAC Championship.

In the field events, the Crusaders had four throwers participating for the first time in program history.  Liam Hamway (8.85m, 21.53m), Julio Lima (8.45m, 22.08m), Connor Mulcahy (7.67m, 18.47m), and Nathaniel Orf (6.53m, 19.73m) all posted marks in the shot put and discus throw, respectively.  Hamway also recorded a new PR in the javelin throw with a mark of 37.87m.

On the women's side, Teresa Pinedo ran the 400m, posting a time of 1:30.14.  Jessie Ramirez competed in the shot put and discus throw, recording marks of 7.09m and 18.71m, respectively.

"It was a great meet all around.  We were the smallest program there, but we showed dedication and grit," said head coach Nick Schneigert.  "This was season was an important step forward for us as we continue to build this program, and next season is sure to be even better with the recruits we've got coming in.  The throwers came out and fought, no matter the outcome, and Johny winning the 400m is such a huge accomplishment!  This is what builds programs."
