Track and Field Competes at Mississippi College Season Opener

CLINTON, Miss. - The University of Dallas men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their season at the Mississippi College Season Opener on Saturday.  Five women competed across five events, and 10 men competed across seven events.

Tessa Hastings represented the Crusaders in the 100 meters, posting a time of 14.96.  She also ran the 200 meters with Agnes Hernandez; Hernandez finishing in 31.81, and Hastings in 32.06.  Hernandez led the pack for the Crusaders in the 400 meters with a time of 1:07.72.  She ran alongside Miranda Roach, who finished in1:16.97, and Tereda Pinedo, who finished in 1:27.55.

Jessie Ramirez was the lone thrower for the Crusaders on the women's side, recording marks of 15.66m in the discus and 6.80m in the shot put.

On the men's side, Johnny Olmsted was the Crusaders' lone runner in the 200 and 400 meter races.  He posted a time of 23.10 in the 200 meters, then set a new school record with a 49.53 in the 400 meter race.  The previous record of 50.07 that stood for nearly 11 years belonged to former UD Track and Field Head Coach, Matt Barber.

Joseph Rodda and Caleb Clayton ran the 800 meters, posting times of 2:20.89 and 2:22.51, respectively.  Clayton also ran the 1500 meters, posting a new PR of 4:53.69.

Nico Walz and James Latour ran the 5000 meters; Walz ran it in 18:05.42, and Latour in 19:05.68.

There were five throwers on the men's side who competed in the javelin throw and the shot put.  Liam Hamway led the pack for Dallas in both events, recordings marks of 31.79m in the javelin and 10.67 in the shot put.  In the javelin, Hamway was followed by Nathaniel Orf (26.80m), Julio Lima (25.55m), Gabriel King (21.50m), and Connor Mulcahy (ND).  In the shot put, after Hamway the order was Lima (9.67m), King (9.52m), Orf (7.45m), and Mulcahy (7.35m).

"This was a great meet to start off with, we really enjoy these single-day events," said head coach Nick Schneigert.  "These athletes had a lot of fun, with many of them competing in events for the first time ever.  It was well worth the trip."

The Crusaders will be on the road next week, competing in the Hendrix College Alumni Open on Saturday, March 11.
