Crusaders Fight off Schreiner; Clinch SCAC Tournament Berth

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team used a second half comeback at Schreiner University to secure its third Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) win on the season. Schreiner (3-15-1, 1-8 SCAC) got a goal from Jalen Vasquez at the 30-minute mark and took that lead into halftime. Dallas stormed back in the second half scoring two goals in a span of three minutes with the help from Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) and Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.). Haughland later added his second goal of the contest at the 77th minute to give UD some breathing room. This 3-1 score would eventually be the final outcome.

Dallas (5-10-1, 3-5-1 SCAC) outshot the Mountaineers 19-14 in the contest, but SU broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute after Vasquez was able to beat the Crusaders goalkeeper. SU was looking to knock Dallas out of the conference tournament taking this 1-0 lead into halftime. UD then stormed back in the second half. Ogueri was just substituted into the game and he made an immediate impact. Less than a minute after rejoining his team on the pitch, he tied the game up at one after he received a pass from Haugland. Schreiner took shots that were high after the tying goal. The Dallas offense regrouped and made another attack. This time Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) passed a great ball to Haugland who was able to find the back of the net and give UD its first lead of the game.

Eight minutes later Haugland was able to score once again as Ogueri was credited with the assist this time. As time ticked down SU took a few more shots, but the Crusaders defense stood tough and helped Dallas escape Kerrville with the conference victory and end a four-game skid.

Haugland and Reynolds led Dallas with five and three shots, respectively. Haugland placed four of his on frame, while Reynolds had one. Sean Carlin (Puyallup, Wash.) notched his first win in goal this season making four saves on the day.

Rutilio Hernandez and Dylan Blough led the Mountaineers with three shot attempts. Four other SU players had two attempts. Cody Smith notched nine saves in goal playing all 90 minutes.

Dallas won the corner kicks battle 6-2.

"SU came out with a good energy on their Senior day. We went down 0-1 on a long-range shot. We had the general run of play, but we were not creating enough quality chances. With around a half hour left we made some large-scale tactical changes. We scored seconds later and that turned out to be a good sign. Second a third goals followed quickly, and we were able to see the game out without too much drama." – Coach Hoffmann
