Crusaders Fall to the University of St. Thomas (TX) on Senior Day

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team fell to the University of St. Thomas (TX) 3-0 on Sunday afternoon where UD celebrated Senior Day. The Celts (9-5, 5-1 SCAC) outshot Dallas 21-9 and forced 12 corner kicks in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) matchup. St. Thomas broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute after Carlos Marquez scored on a free kick from just outside of the box. Dallas put four shots on goal making the Celts goalie notch a save on each shot. UST gathered two more goals in the second half to grab the conference win.

Dallas (4-9-1, 2-4-1 SCAC) had a few early shots, but most of them missed wide after Fabrizio Policastro took the opening shot of the game for the Celts which was saved by the Dallas keeper. UST kept the offensive attack going as they had five corner kicks in a span of five minutes. The game was back-and-forth towards the end of the half. A foul was then called just outside the UD box, which led to a free kick for St. Thomas. Marquez beat the wall and the keeper left with his strike to put the Celts up 1-0. This lead would hold up at the halftime break.

UST took the first six shots of the second period. Chase Reynolds (Southlake, Texas) then had a solid look for the Crusaders, but his shot was swallowed up by the goalie. A few minutes later, Maxwell Lockhart found some room in the Dallas defense and dribbled through a few defenders and eventually found the back of the net to grab a 2-0 lead. Like before, Dallas had two more good looks, but could not beat the UST keeper. At the 84th minute Jael Puga was fed by Luis Garza in the attacking third of the field. With the Dallas defense and keeper out of position his soft roller gave UST a 3-0 lead. UD was unable to find any offensive rhythm in the final minutes.

Maxwell Lockhart led the Celts with 11 shots, placing five of them on frame. The next closest teammate was Luis Bencomo who had three. Pedro Medrano secured his sixth win in goal for the Celts with four saves.

Brady McNamara (San Antonio, Texas) and Reynolds both took two shots for UD, firing one shot on goal each. Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) and Patrick Hasson (Fairfax, Va.) each had the other shots on frame. Sean Carlin (Puyallup, Wash.) notched eight saves playing all 90 minutes in goal.
