Crusaders Earn 1-1 Draw at Southwestern to Begin SCAC Play
GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Dallas men's soccer team and Southwestern University battled in what resulted in a 1-1 tie after two overtimes on Friday. The Crusaders (2-5-1) played in its first overtime game on the season after playing in four a year ago. Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) tied the game up just moments into the second half after Dallas had been shutout heading into the halftime break. Caleb Strange (Argyle, Texas) equaled his season-best with 10 saves on the evening to keep Dallas in the game.
In the 30th minute Jose Martinez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) had a strike towards goal, but a defensive save by Garrison Van Houten kept the game even. Luis Ramirez then scored the first goal of the match in the 31st minute when his strike from the top of the box found the top left corner of the net over the outstretched UD keeper. Both teams took eight shots in the first half. The biggest difference was the Pirates had four placed on goal, while UD only had one.
Just moments into the second half, Ogueri had a header shot saved by the Pirates keeper. A minute later Tomas DePetris (Houston, Texas) and Hunter Haugland (Bixby, Okla.) helped feed Ogueri on the left side of the box which he was able to handle and strike a shot past the Southwestern goalie to pull the game even.
The Pirates had four corner kicks early in the second half and were able to get some shots out of them, but they all were kept out of the net. SU had a big chance in the 76th minute with a pass to the middle of the box which was handled and shot by Ramirez but a save by Strange and help from the defense kept the game tied at one. SU had one last opportunity with time ticking down off a corner kick. The ball got tangled up between two opponents in the box and eventually the horn sounded with the game heading to overtime. SU outshot Dallas 20-12 in regulation.
As the game headed to overtime SU came out firing shots. The Pirates eventually struck nine balls near or around the frame and notched four corner kicks. The Dallas defense held sturdy and kept the game tied with most of overtime played on the Pirates attacking third of the field. UD was able to muster two shots in the two 10-minute periods. SU won the corner kicks battle 12-3 and outshot Dallas 29-14, while the Dallas defense was very much needed as six defensive saves were recorded.
Seth Holtzmann led the Pirates with five shots taken placing three on goal. Six other Southwestern players attempted three or more shots. Jackson Krueger made one save on the night and allowed one goal for as the SU keeper.
Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas) led the Dallas attack with four shots, as Martinez added three attempts. Strange played the majority of the game in goal notching 10 saves, allowing one goal. Craig Drozdowski (Cypress, Texas) came in for a short stint as the Dallas keeper after Strange got shaken up. Drozdowski played the rest of the match apart of the Crusaders defense.
Ogueri gathered his fourth goal on the season.
